Should I write a letter to my manager?

posted 26th Apr '12
Lately my hours have been crazy. I used to work 8-5 4 days a week. Now I work mainly later in the day, like starting at 11 or 12. I also used to not work Saturdays. I have day care help but I need to be working 3 weeks days a week to qualify.

I'm thinking about writing a letter to the new manager. We just got a new one because our old one transferred to a different store. I'm changing my availability saying I can't work Saturdays anymore. My mom mainly works on Saturdays so I really don't have anyone to watch LO. But I also need earlier hours because it's mainly me just raising LO. SO works and he doesn't even live with us.

The problem is if we have our schedules limited, they cut our hours. I want to write a letter saying how I need earlier hours or I could lose my day care help if he's not in 3 full days a week and then I'd need to quit. I just don't know if they'd see it as disrespectful or me being demanding.

She doesn't start for another week. Also they are always busy. My last manager I'd have to talk to him with all the other managers around and then they'd all bitch about how everyone whines about hours and we should be grateful we even have jobs.

Sure, and I'd be looking for a different job in the mean time.

Quoting Noneya Business:" Why?"

Because I doubt they will give you more hours if they aren't giving other people more hours. And if they are real pissy, they might try to weed you out by not giving you any hours until you quit.

I'm not asking for more hours. I'm asking for the hours I used to work or at least not 2nd shift back. All the 2nd shift people for some reason got switched to first and I got switched to 2nd.

Yeah, so you are asking for more hours, because you cannot work saturdays, so that cuts your availability and thus you'll be asking for more hours.
Is 3 days a week really worth it anyway, I mean what kind of job is it?

I used to work Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday. Right now I'm pretty much working whenever they feel like it with no reasoning. I'm needed on Mondays because we get a huge order on Sunday night and need to reset the floor on Monday morning. The one girl I work with used to have her schedule so she could only work late and all day on weekends because of her LO. After she opened up her schedule, everyone's was messed up because our old manager left and a manager from a different department was doing it not knowing who was who and what hours they usually work.
