Can you mix breastmilk with formula? help!!

posted 23rd Apr '12
My son had severe reflux and couldnt take my breastmilk so i pumped and stored in a deep freezer for later on. Now he can take the breastmilk as long as i put thickener.but he needs the extra calories...so drs told me to add formula. but i dont want to do that as i think it will dilute the nutrients in the breastmilk. right now for weight he is in the 3rd percentile. you think id be okay with just giving my frozen breastmilk..? i cant pump now because due to my cancer treatment starting again i had to stop pumping....

i realize already using frozen milk isnt the best because im sure its not as healthy as fresh but better than nothing right?

You can jsut give him the frozen, or you can add in formula, I added in formula to my breastmilk when my daughter was not gaining weight, we eventually just went to just formula though cause she was still not gaining.

did you make it to 24 cal? just adding powder to it or preparing the formula and then adding it?

I actually used the milk in place of water...so I would add 1 scoop of formula to 2 oz of BM.

this is how to mix it for weight gain. If you were just adding formula because you werent producing enough breastmilk then you would do half breastmilk half prepared formula.

yeah i might need to make his like that because my son was a preemie...and still having weight issues. im going to see how things go with only breastmilk and moniter to make sure he doesnt lose weight. right now hes on high calorie formula and still in the 3rd percentile for weight.

My daughter was not even on the charts which is why the encouraged me to take her off the breast and put her on the fomula. it was also a high calorie formula that I was able to get covered through insurance because it cost so much.

She was not a premi though, she was born at 8lbs 5 oz 21.5 inches long. but by 4 months was only 9lbs 11 oz. They told me if she didnt start gaining they were goin got have to hospitalize her. She is still really tiny in the 3rd precentile. she weighs 25-26 lbs and is over 3 years old.

My son just got out of the NICU and yes you can. They are having me at 1 tsp of EnfaCare (Enfamil) formula to 90 ml of breast milk   He is still getting the nutrients of my breastmilk but with the extra calories he needs to grow. He has been doing this for about 4 days (we JUST got out of the NICU) and his discharge weight was 5 lbs 11 oz and the next day we went to the doctor and he was already over 6 pounds   Try it and see if your baby does well   Good luck!

no, you shouldnt just use breastmilk, and adding formula too it will not decrease the nutrients. my son was on 24 k/cal coming home too. you add powdered formula too the breastmilk, no water, to increase the calories. they should give you a paper on how much powder to had to how many oz of milk
