I don't get this whole mucus plug thing...

posted 27th Apr
So, I haven't lost mine (that I've noticed anyways...) nor am I particularly interested in losing mine.  I was just really confused and wondering if someone would clear it up for me.

However, I was reading that you don't always lose your mucus plug, I've also heard that when your cervix opens to a 2 or so then you'll usually lose it.  So I don't get it, you have to eventually lose it, is it just that you don't notice it?  Or does it just hang out up there no matter how much you've dilated?  I guess I'm just confused on how that works.

Hah u know whats wierd? I got checked the 24th for dialation and Im compoletely closed... but this afternoon i lost my mucus plug, and i wouldnt have noticed it if i didnt look in the toilet after i went pee... I know kinda gross.. but it was a green snot-like thing with a tinge of blood in it .. and I'm only due a day before you... my mom said she lost her mcuus plug at the hospital, so i guess its different for everyone... My boyfriends mother said that she went into labor the next day after she lost her plug, so I'm hoping that doesnt happen for me... becuase I've been having pretty bad cramps all day =/

Hm, I'm 2cm's dilated and haven't lost it yet or if I have, I've not noticed it. I think sometimes you can lose it without noticing and sometimes you don't lose it until you're in labor already and by that time, you won't notice it lol especially if you're in the hospital and were induced.

Everyone has to lose theirs at some point, but you dont always notice it. Sometimes it comes out in peices, and you mistake it for normal discharge, or it can fall out into the toilet when you go to the bathroom and you might not see it at all.I was dialated to a 2 for a week before my daughter was born, and I never remember losing mine at all.   Also, if you get checked for dialation at all by your doc in the weeks before you deliver, it can come out on their glove and you wouldnt see it. Its just a thick glob of old looking mucus and its not neccessarily a BIG glob. So all my point is, its easy to miss!

Well if you lose a glob of mucous and your cervix stays relatively closed, it will regenerate a new one. Your cervix makes mucus your whole pregnancy, just like normal so it makes plenty more!

That happened to me when I was about 23 weeks, I freaked out...but they said that it will make itself over again and I didn't need to worry.  So I've seen it before (it wasn't bloodtinged then or anything, just looked like a snot booger) I just was wondering how it worked in general...since I've heard these conflicting reports.

Well its good for it to be there, it helps kill any bacteria that might try to get into your cervix, and helps protect from infection of any kind.   So its a good thing to have! You'll have a bunch of slippery eggwhite looking CM with your bloody show during early labor anyhow.... so its gonna be gross no matter what! LOL

"CM"?  I may just have some pregnancy brain going on...but I can't think of what that would stand for...
