First birthday cake

DD will be one next friday. Any good cake flavor recommendations? Are there certain flavors she shouldn't have? (like chocolate?)
are themed cakes expensive? I know for at least one of her childhood birthdays I would love to get her a Little Mermaid themed cake  

I just did white cake and she had a tinkerbell cake for her 1st party

why not chocolate??

I just did Yellow cake for the 1st birthdays.

I didn't get any custom or specialty cake made. I made theirs myself and bought a sheet cake for the guests. You can get decorations from Michaels for the cake if you want a themed one.

I think we are doing Little Mermaid for Ayla this year. She has really gotten in to Sea Life (fish, mermaids, etc.)

I made an awesome rainbow cake for my daughter's 2nd birthday...

6 layers, I used a white cake so the colors were really vivid, chocolate frosting in between the layers, and then on the outside it was white with small green and yellow decorations.

It was a hit! Especially because you had no idea it was a rainbow until you cut into it.

I went to walmart and got a scooby-doo themed cake for E's first birthday and we got a free smash cake (one of the tiny personal cakes)

That's the great thing about it-- it was really easy! You just mix the color into the cake batter in separate bowls, cook 'em, stack 'em, frost it!

I saw a really cool mason jar rainbow thingy and I want to do that..I guess I would do that same thing just cut into circles to fit the jar.

I'm making TWO for my sister's shower tomorrow. Worked on them for 5 hours last night, and have only one of the two stacked >.<

I highly recommend the Wilton gel coloring-- really nice vivid colors that you cannot get from the drops! You can get them at any Michael's
