Down syndrome and breech.

posted 21st Apr '12
I found out a while back that my baby may have down syndrome but I turned down the amnio, so I'm still not %100 sure. I recently found out that he's breech. Could this have any connection?

Nope my son was breech for a long time and he doesn't have DS.

No. I don't think so.

I actually have read online that there MIGHT be a connection in breech babies and congenital defects. But there's no guarantee, and the risk is only SLIGHTLY higher, so I wouldn't worry. PLENTY of breech babies are fine.

No connection. Lots of people get told their baby may have down syndrome, but their babies don't. I was told with both my babies they may have down syndrome, got amnios with both of them and they're perfect lil babies!

ETA: My daughter became breeched (sp?) 3 days before my c-sec, and she's a healthy lil 3mo old

I doubt there's any connection, my 9yr old was a breech baby (but turned day before scheduled caeser) and she's perfect

My son was breech my whole pregnancy and he is a very smart and healthy child. My sister in law both her children were breech her oldest is healthy and in all gifted programs and her youngest is very healthy. There is NOT a correlation between breech and DS. Hope all turns out well for you. Depending on how you found out about the possible DS and how far along you are another ultrasound might help verify but no promises there. Best wishes to you.

Thanks so much. I'm sorry for your situation as well, it's definitely not easy finding that out.. how did they detect this in your baby? I'm due May 14th, what about you? And me too! I haven't met very many women who have been told the same thing.

This is just something I had read google that freaked me out a bit. Your story is actually very comforting! It's nice to know someone went through the exact same thing and everything turned out fine   Congrats on your little ones!

Mine was found out through the mandatory state blood testing they do.. and It is not for certain that the baby has it but my husband and I have decided to opt out of the amnio because of the risks. I know that the risks are not terribly high but after having a miscarriage 2 years ago I just do not want to take the chance. I go in for my U/S on the 1st and I am hoping that maybe they can tell me something but I know that just an U/S is not going to tell me anything for sure.. My Doctor told me yesterday that I have to prepare myself and not say my baby might have down syndrome but to say my baby is a down syndrome baby just to have the right mind set for when the baby is born.. The baby will be loved and taken care of no matter what.. I am soooo hoping to find out the sex of the baby on the 1st and I am Due September 16..

when i had my first baby i asked loads of questions about this cos i said even if i came back high risk i would also refuse the amnio, my midwife told me not to worry cos in a lot of high risk cases it could just mean the baby is a girl, she said the gene they use to detect ds is very similar to a gene girls carry, so ive always been confused by this as to why bother doin it in the first place, do you have any other things that would make you high risk?, im also breech and ive never herd of a connection between the two,but i wish you all the best,

Only my blood test came back positive for something in down syndrome, I have no other signs. I've just read that a lot of the time down syndrome babies are breech. My baby's also a boy.. well, I guess I'll I have to wait and see! Thanks so much   I'll give updates.
