If you've had an abortion...

posted 19th Apr '12
If you had it done in the clinic, how do they do it? Is there a pill they give you or do they do some kind of procedure? And what was your experience afterwards? Did you have nausea, vomitting, and severe pain? Did they give you antibiotics and pain medication?

This is not about me, I am not getting an abortion. I just want to know because I have a friend that is having it done.

The way that it's preformed depends on how far along she is.
They only do the pill form until a certain point, after that it's the surgical procedure.

Depending on how far along the women is she can either have a medical or surgical abortion... medical is with the pills. There's pain with both I've heard, when I had my surg abortion I had a lot of pain during the procedure even though I was under the twilight. I didn't get any pain medication and no medication at first, but I had a fever for a few days afterwards and went to the ER and they gave me an antibiotic there.

I had a procedure. I had pain medication during and after they gave me like a super ibuprofan rx. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as I had thought it would be. I had the twilight sleep drug before they started. I was very tired and had pretty bad cramping about 24 hours later. But it was nothing a heat pad couldn't help, I felt very relieved after it was all done. I wish your friend nothing but the best. I hope her experience is as easy as mine was.

I've done the abortion pill and the actual medical procedure.

The pill, they basically give you some pain killers, xanax, etc to keep you chill then give you tablet that will kill the fetus while you're in the office. A few hours later you have to put 3-5 other pills on your gum line to dissolve which basically forces your body to start labor and push out the placenta and fetus. The pain was immense from the cramping and I bled for quite a while afterwards.

The medical procedure, they did the same cocktail of pain killers and xanax. It was super fast. They put some rods in my uterus (I think anyway... I don't handle pills very well and was kinda loopy...) and it kicked up dilation. After that, they turned on suction and that was it. No pain and almost no bleeding.

It depends on how far along you are. Here, up to 7 weeks you get the pill.
Both of mine were the surgical procedures.

I went to a clinic.
I'll list the steps I took.
-sat in the waiting room for an hour.
-called back and got an ultrasound to determine gestational age
-put in a room with about 10 other women
-waited for another hour
-a therapist came in and talked to us about what we may be "feeling"
-we ere called back one by one to change into a gown
-we sat back in the room together again
-we were called back one by one to get the procedure done. the last thing I remember is them putting the IV in. I don't remember anything about the procedure. It's way foggy in my mind. I do remember crying though. not sure if it was from pain or not. after that we went back into a sort of "recovery room" where they gave us crackers and lemonade to eat until we got the strength to get up and get changed. I threw up on the way home. Only bleed for a little over a week.

Yeah I was screaming and crying my ass off. It was very painful. I was young too.
I think in TX they have anesthesia but I did it in NM.

Here, they give anesthesia and you have to have a designated driver with you, or you can't get it done.

It is. I just wished they would have knocked me out somehow. It was a bit traumatizing.
OP if it's for a friend, I would recommend making sure they use some sort of anesthesia.

thats probably a good thing because i don't wish anyone to have to go through that experience fully awake and aware of everything thats going on.

I was awake, but I definitely wasn't aware. I just remember bits and pieces. I remember crying hysterically, but I couldn't remember why I was. lol. I didn't know if it was because it hurt or because I was sad. I didn't really feel sad going into it, so I guess it must have been painful. I would hate to have to be aware through something like that. I'm sorry you had to go through that.
