is it a bad idea to give my baby her dads last name?

I would say it depends on the situation.
If you think he will be a good father, and will do everything he is supposed to I would give the baby his last name (my son has his fathers last name, because I don't have a doubt in my mind that he'll stop being his father)
If you think otherwise, your last name.

If he's in it to win it and will be a present and involved father and you have plans to stay together long term or marry, I would say yes. If you will be a single/sole involved parent, I would give the baby yours.

It's really up to you and how you feel about your situation. I gave my son his dad's last name. We got married later though. If you think he's going to be involved, then sure. If it's just going to be you and the baby, then no. But it really just depends on how you feel about it.

Not necessarily. Most people do it that way because it's tradition.

I did and I didn't... my daughter's last name is hyphenated between my last and her dad's last.

My son has his dad's last name. I haven't had any problems proving my motherhood (never had to show his birth certificate) but he's only 2 and not in school yet or anything. I'm also engaged to his dad, so hyphenating it seems kind of silly to me since I"ll be taking his last name anyway (there are other factors that have nothing to do with our kid, just Daddy's opinion regarding names and stuff)

But no. It actually makes it easier to prove dad is the dad in most cases from what I've heard.

I agree with ^.^ Chippermunkk. My daughter will have her fathers last name because I know no matter what he'll always be there for you.
My dad wasn't happy with my choice but it isn't his choice. You just have to do what you think is right.

Go with what you feel is right. That's the best anyone can say!

I'm not even together with my son's father anymore, but I have never once regretted the decision about it. (we broke up when our son was 6 months old) and even after our break up he never changed the way he did things with or son
