Ice, Ice, Baby...

posted 10th Apr '12
For the past week, I've had this uncontrollable urge to chew on ice. I eat so much of it that my ice machine cannot keep up, and once a day my sister is bringing over gallon ziplock bags from her's and my mom's ice machine...not to mention that every time I've left the house in the past week, I stop and get a cup of ice at least twice from the gas station!
I've tried to "stop" chewing on it, but I can't...it's the weirdest thing.

With my son I chewed/ate ice my whole pregnancy.
The minute after I had him I couldn't do it anymore, it hurts my teeth so much.
I haven't craved it this pregnancy and I wouldn't be able to do it anyways because of my teeth.

On the other hand, craving and chewing ice (pagophagia) is often associated with iron deficiency anemia.

I guess I should add I have always had an iron deficiency and it got worse when I was pregnant.
I was taking iron 2 times a day and still no help to my iron levels

holy...what! people eat dirt and cigarette ashes! Well, that's a bit extreme...I thought my ice craving was just a particular thing, not something really serious and that says it could harm the baby!

Yes it can be a sign of Iron Deficiency Anemia! Lots of women experience PICA for different reasons! Crunchy foods can frequently indicate low iron!
