Birth Rates. D&D

This was posted on our local News facebook page. and i just wanted to hear others thoughts.

Fresh off the AP wires: the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention is reporting teen birth rates dropped in almost every state in 2010. But the states with the highest birth rates remain in the South. Tennessee has the 10th-highest teen birth rate, Georgia has the 13th-highest, & Mississippi tops the list.
Up for discussion: why do you think teen birth rates remain consistently high in the South?

Religion
Abstinence only education and refusal to abort.

My first thought is rebellion against conservative family beliefs and religion.

Idk maybe there's nothing else for teens to do than get pregnant

Because it's always warm there! Not really, but I did read an article once that said teens have sex more in the summer when it's warm.

This.
Plus the rural aspect.
The south is far more rural and undeveloped, leaving smurf to do for teenagers. Sex quickly becomes the activity of choice.

One of my guesses would be since the south is pretty religious, they may not agree with abortions.
Other than that, from my experience in Mississippi, it's pretty boring down there so there's not much else to do except have sex. jk

religion and family beliefs. Here in NC, there is a huge billboard that says "Every 28 minutes a North Carolina teen gets pregnant. Parents talk to your kids." I laugh hysterically every time I pass it.

Abstinence only education is terrible.

Not to be a bitch or offend anyone... but I honestly believe it's partially because of education, but also because of the lifestyles. I've lived in New England, and the Southwest, and am currently in the Mid-Atlantic... the lifestyles, in general, are COMPLETELY different. New England has a more uptight way of life, people tend to focus more on higher education and better long-term careers. Probably has a lot to do with the schools in the area, and old money. In the Southwest it's more laid back do whatever type of life. Go to school, don't go to school... the cost of living is a LOT lower, and also - here we go - the whole illegal immigrant situation. As for the "deep" south, I've only visited there, never lived there... and while the physical land was different than I expected it to be, the majority of the people fit the stereotypes. And most of the money there seems to be in estates, and from horse racing.

Our school refused to even talk about teen pregnancy. Instead, we got a conference on dating violence...
And the typical "Drug/Alcohol Free!!" speeches.
