re: Cocaine use and baby

There just needs to be a happy medium with discussing the severity of her actions and offering her hope and encouragement to go seek help. Its a hard topic for me to speak about completely unbiased. I think after reading it, she should probably understand.

Quoting ~Raven & Declans Mama~:" <blockquote><b>Quoting Queen_B:</b>" Actually for being personally affected I thought ... [snip!] ... bothers me. Don't know why. But you were less harsh than some of the other responses and you did offer good informative advice"

I get really touchy about the subject too. My biological father was addicted to a wide array of drugs and alcohol and that is why he ended up dying. I was not close with him, but I still felt kinda bad that he couldn't get past it.

I didn't read all the pages but I used to work in a rehab. Women who used cocaine during pregnancy generally had premature, low birth weight babies who tended to have developmental delays. Many had problems with thier lungs and your baby will need to be detoxed at birth. In general women who used cocaine had the highest number of complications and the impact on their babies was greater than even women who were heavy opiate users. In not saying this will be the case 100% of the time and I'm not passing judgement. I know it's hard but there are programs out there just for pregnant women and it seems like you need to be in one! They will help you find the resources you need to get the best start for your baby.
As far as social services. If they have you on file for something else, expect them to be invloved. But cocaine has a short half-life and will move through your system quickly. If they do test you and you test positive they do not automatically take the baby unless you have a history of another other abuse. But they will make you enter a program and take drug tests and monitor you and the baby. Please take this as a chance to reach out for help. Professionals will not judge you, there are sadly a ton of pregnant women who are addicted and we would rather they get support than not!

Quoting superpregnant:" This. Should've would”ve could've helps no one, not even the baby. Most rehabs won't accept pregnant ... [snip!] ... and got the help she needed, and is still INCREDIBLY lucky. Do everything you can to keep yourself clean and your baby safe."

actually it's the opposite, if a pregnant woman calls for help they will MAKE room for her. It's part of the state guidelines and if there's no room at that place they will call and find you a place that has room. It's not about the risk to the rehab it's about the risk to the patient and her baby, they come 1st!

It takes tremendous courage to come forward and ask for help of any kind. To ask for help with a very delicate and contraversial subject as this one really says a lot about the concern this mom-to-be is experiencing, especially that she knew she would likely get flack for it.
It is also hard not to be judgemental and put oneself in the other person's place. However, unless you have something positive to add or any encouragement or real advice, negative comments will only make this person feel worse! Is that what your judgemental comments want to elicit? Making this person feel worse, not seek help, and probably continue to use to deal with the pain of everything she is going through?
The science behind any kind of substance use during pregnancy when all boiled down basically says that no one really knows what any person's particular outcome will be. To say that one thing, (substance, behavior, etc.), directly causes any negative outcome of anything, (birth defect, learining disability, etc), has not been definitevly proven...with anything! There are just too many variables. Look at all the scientific studies yourselves...all of the data from each study. And I mean REAL science.... not just someone's opininon. Most will even state some things that have not been accounted for and that "further study is required".
To frighten an already terrified pregnant woman is the true "wrong" here. Get your facts straight and think about what your are doing before stating something that could actually do more harm both to mom and the unborn baby!

I'm curious what ever happened to BG Secrets and her baby? Was it detected in the baby's first stool and wondering if the baby is okay?
