re: Cocaine use and baby

posted 9th Apr '12
It depends on the states that you live in. If you feel as though you are unable to stop using I would talk to my OB about it.

Coming forward and asking for help will show that you are willing to work at being a good parent. If you listen to your Ob's recommendations, go to rehab even while pregnant and show that you are working on your addiction Child Protection will see this as a much more positive sign then if they found out at the hospital by chance. That way they could prepare on possible side effects your baby could have once born.

If you do show positively that you want to work at your addiction there is a good chance that you would have a supervised custody as opposed to taking the baby away from his/her mother. You will likely be assigned a social worker who will randomly come and make sure you are coping well, offer you support you need and ask for random drug tests.

You have to be willing to move forward and work at it though. The last thing CPS wants to do is take a child away from his/her parents. Unfortunately it has to be done sometimes but those cases, from my experience, are because parents are not willing to admit that they need help or wanting to change destructive habits.

Best of luck to you and I strongly recommend that you ask for help now. They will support you through it all I'm sure of it

Coke stays in your system up to 3 days. So if you used 2 weeks ago, it is MOST LIKELY out of the baby's system and definitely out of yours. If you don't use for the rest of your pregnancy you will come up clean for cocaine. My husband's friend sniffed coke through both her pregnancies. Her son has a multitude of health problems, but developmentally on track. He does have sever ADHD, though. She didn't use as much with her daughter and she's fine as far as we know, but she's only 3 so it's too early to tell.
As for the other pills, I can't tell you. You have to be more specific.

Birth defects are still a big risk so is withdrawals which the child can die from cleft palate and mental disorders are common in babies whose mother used during pregnancy there's alot of things that can go wrong with this situation since it wasn't just one drug it was multiple (pills are drugs too) not saying the baby will have problems but it is highly likely

Withdrawl is a bigger risk than birth defects, not saying that withdrawl is not an issue, I know it is, I went through this with my friend. I understand that pills are drugs too. Bottom line is she is trying to stop and is asking for help now so that she can make sure her baby has the best possible outcome.

Have you ever gone through such an addiction? It is torture. I've heard from some mothers who had addictions that they cried and screamed and hated themselves while using because they HAD to use. Not chose too, HAD to. This cannot be done cold turkey just because one is pregnant.

Calling someone ridiculous because she is asking for help was definitively not the best approach.

It's that kind of, you should know better you are not getting anything from me, attitude that makes many addicts afraid to come forward and ask for help.

In a lot of addiction cases sometimes it isn't recommended to stop cold turkey because the stress can be damning. You should seek medical help and rehab.

Well said. And most of the time even if they wanted to stop cold turkey it is NOT recommended to stop that way because it can cause even more problems.

This. Should've would”ve could've helps no one, not even the baby.

Most rehabs won't accept pregnant women because of the risk, but there is other help out there. Talk to your OB. I hope you find a way to stay sober for the rest of your pregnancy. My SO's boss did cocaine almost daily for the first 5 months of her pregnancy(didn't realize she was pregnant) and her son is a semester away from completing college. She told her OB what was going on though and got the help she needed, and is still INCREDIBLY lucky. Do everything you can to keep yourself clean and your baby safe.

YOU'RE ridiculous.
Obviously the woman is struggling with addiction. Something many people cannot overcome. I commend her for looking for help and admitting that she has an issue. No need to be an ass about it.

Agreed, which is why she needs to come forward to her OB. With the support of medical professionals she can move forward and prepare as best for her and her child's help.

I just hate it when some people go all "YOU'RE RIDICULOUS" when it's a situation they can't understand.

OP. I know you probably wont but if you ever want to talk you can PM me (it will stay between us) and I'll give you my number. You should try rehabs or NA to help you deal. If your serious about stopping then this will help. I hope you get better. Addictions can be terrible. I have had a bad addiction but it was not drugs. So I know it can be hard. good luck

And I pray she can find help. I come from a whole family of addicts so I know what its like for them and their children growing up its not easy and it takes a lot of strength and courage to ask for help...even if the help was just to know some consequences of their actions

Exactly. I'm glad she is doing what she can now to get the help she needs to get this under control so that her and her child can have the best possible outcome. I hate when people sit on their high horse and get all judgmental when they have no idea what that other person is going through.
