Removing a hemangioma

posted 8th Apr '12
Not sure where to post this so I am posting it here because DD is a preemie and I guess hemangiomas are more common in preemies.

Has anyone had a hemangioma removed on themselves or their child? How long was the recovery and did it scar really bad? Did it take a long time to get insurance to approve it?? TIA!

I ask because DD has a hemangioma the size of a quarter and it's constantly ulcerating. She's on medicine for it but it just won't stop ulcerating and we really feel it's causing a lot of problems developmentally, especially cause she can't/won't sit when it's ulcerating. It also causes weight gain issues cause she won't eat, and this time it's even infected. *sigh*

My daughter was a preemie who had a hemangioma that was the size ofa silver dollar at its largest, and it stuck out from her skin about an inch. It ulcerated a couple of times and bled horribly. We took her to a dermatologist and he injected it with steroids, I believe. (Sorry, this was about 12 years ago, I don't remember everything exactly.) It caused the hemangioma to shrink considerably and she never had problems with it ulcerating again. This particular hemangioma was so large that the dr. said she it would probably never disappear completely, as most hemangiomas do. My daughter is now 12 and while you can still somewhat see the hemangioma, it really isn't that noticeable unless you are looking for it. It's a very light pink color now, almost skin colored.

Thanks. They found out a few years ago that this medicine for blood pressure works to keep the hemangiomas from getting out of control so this way they don't need to do steroids. I'm not sure if that's an option but I will ask them what the options are. It just bleeds so much and because it's on her butt that means it's in her diaper all day long :/

Thanks for telling me your story. I am happy that this hemangioma isn't in a noticeable place for her, although she does have one next to her eye.

ETA: Ok they all tell me that these hemangiomas can't be felt when they ulcerate. Did your daughter seem to be bothered by it when it ulcerated?????

Thanks
I didn't even see your original post but I have an idea of what it said and that's why I added the bottom part. Yeah, this is not a cosmetic thing that I'm concerned about except for scarring if we did do the surgery. We wouldn't have even put her on medicine in the first place if she didn't have one so close to her eye.
