Talking?

posted 6th Apr '12
My daughter was born at 34wk 6d. She just turned 1 on the 16th. She isn't really saying words yet. Is that normal? She babbles and makes sounds. She says mama and dada but doesn't actually connect it to us being mom and dad.

I was just wondering how other preemies were with talking. When they started and what not.

TIA

I don't know if it's helpful or not, as my older son was not premature, but by age one, he didn't say anything. He babbled, but no real words with meaning.

Same.
And wow, does she talk now.

My little man was born at 35 weeks and he is 15months
He doesn't really say much. He will babble all day long but not really make any words. He does copy our sounds though. Like if we tell him to say hi or bye he will say it. I wouldn't worry about a 1 yr old. My sons dr just said we will keep an eye on it but that they should start talking more by 18 months

Thanks!
She does copy us sometimes. And my mom, being a graduate in communication, says that that is at least a good start for talking.
Just wanted to see if she was like really behind or to be worried. But I guess not! So that's good!

Not very much according to her adoptive family. She just turned 2 a month ago and got sent home from daycare with a slip stating she's still hitting other kids. There's no known cause to her reluctance to speak, and they figured out she's hitting because she can't communicate with the other kids. My oldest was the same way though. My mum says I was like that as a toddler too, so I think it's just natural for my family

DD was 9 days overdue. But she didn't start saying more than like 4 words till a few weeks ago. She's 20 months now and her vocab just exploded. She says everything now. But when she turned 1, she barely said real words.
