Since I was civilian who grew up in a military family, I wasn't stressed or worried about it because it was my life. He just couldn't do it.

I wouldn't stress over it. It's really how both of you deal with stress, and if your both freaking out, it's going to make it worse.

I know exactly how you feel. The promised paycheck and the health insurance are why I love the military. We just bought a house and I fear that when my hubby gets out we won't be able to make our mortgage payments, but we always find a away to make it work when times are tough. You guys can too.

We've had so many people telling me and my husband that he should just stay in and that pretty much we are doomed to failure in the civilian world. I'm on stress overload.

You can't listen to those people. I know a ton of guys who have done well after being in the military. The military gives you many skills you can use in other jobs. My husband has a friend who is still in the marines but he started a very successful security business, my husband and his friend have begun to start a gun sales business and my hubby is going to school for gunsmithing. We've also known others who have started a body shop business or work as mechanics. Other have gone into law enforcment. All of those things are great for previous servicemen. Don't let people discourage you guys. Tell your husband to start thinking about what he wants to do so he can be as prepared as possible

Let people say what they will - you and your husband can prove them wrong just as easily as you can prove them right.

That's everyone's fear. It's true for me and my ex, but it's not true for EVERYONE, a lot of people transition just fine. You guys can too. Stop listening to everyone else and just go for it yourselves and see what happens. He can always reinlist if he REALLY wants to later on down the road.

And don't stress about it, it will make things worse!

Just wanted to update a bit.

My FIL has his own construction business, and it will be picking up quite a bit this summer so he's going to give my husband some good hours. That should help a lot, and takes a little stress off. So even if he does that and goes to school we will be able to get by. I'll be going to school too, and going back to the old sweatshop (not literally..but pretty damn close) minimum wage job I worked before moving with hubs at least part time.

my husband transitioned pretty well (no we werent together when he got out) but he did have ptsd and pretty bad anxiety, he couldnt even go out in public for a while. he did find a job and kept it for a few years til he found something better. i hope you guys get settled and everything goes smoothly!!

My DH was Army got out on a medical discharge... He was looking for jobs when he knew it was happening. He was on unemployment for about 2 months. Got a job with a local pharmacy that he worked for in high school. it's not the best job but it pays and covers our bills. He is still looking for a good job closer to home!!! PM me if you want!

We handled the transition well up until, everything fell through. My husband went to the police academy in hopes to get a job afterwards, even had a job offer.. He ended up breaking his ankle, and that job offer fell through. He still got certified to be a police officer, but no where is hiring, and most places around here are laying police officers off. My husband is considering rejoining, but we have too many dependents now so it's harder than in the beginning.

ladies, do any of you happen to know if BAH and BAS counts toward your wage for unemployment benefits.

My husband is a Ex Marine. He went to school to be a police officer but had a really hard time getting hired. He ended up having to resort to taking a civilian contracting job in Iraq as a Dog handler at the Embassy!!! Pays great but he is gone just like in the military. He came home then finally found a job as a police officer. It took him awhile. I am sorry your not getting good feedback. Part of the problem is because people are so stupid in human resource departments. My husband actually had a lady in Human Resources from one of his jobs he applied for call him and ask what "this sheet" as she explained it was that he included in his app and why. Well "that sheet" happened to be his Vetrens Preference form!! Nice huh. Whats the point of having those benefits if people don't even recognize them. Hope all works out for you and your family. What ever you do don't let him go into law enforcement. It is hard to find a job.
