why do they make you wait till your five weeks?

to make sure you have a fetus in there. usually you can't see anything on the US till then (and that's even early)

In NC they will do it once you have a confirmed pregnancy in the uterus.

They have to be able to see something in there in order to assure they get it all out, that is the way it was described to me.

Because that's when it can be done surgically. It can be medically terminated in the first 7 weeks (which would technically be about 5 weeks) , but afterwards it needs to be surgically done, so that it is safer for the mother.

ETA: also what the other's said as well, there needs to be a viable pregnancy.

well. if you think about it...2 of the weeks in the "five weeks pregnant" were the two weeks leading up to conception from your last period.

So from conception...and not "LMP" you're really 3 weeks pregnant.
Most people don't know earlier than that to begin with...and something like 20 to 30% of all pregnancies end at that time. It actually could be a higher percentage..but most people don't realize that they've MCed..they just think they're having a heavier period.

And if that happens..then you wouldn't need the abortion.

OH and to clarify....three weeks (Five weeks from LMP) because before that..it could still be in the fallopian tubes traveling to the ute. If it's not in the ute..i don't know if the abortion pills will work.

hmm thanks.

then i have to wonder, if they need to do a US to see if the whatever is in the uterus in order to perform the abortion, why are people against them being mandated? isnt it a health issue anyway?
also, at five weeks is it the transvaginal or do they do the other one?

To my knowledge they are again the women being forced to see the ultra sound, not the ultra sound in general.

And It's still transvag at 5 weeks.

im not trying to turn this into a debate at all, but seriously...on either the daily show or colbert they were making it sound like the issue was the prod, likening it to being "raped"....as in having an object unwillfully put in your vagina. i mean, it just confused me.
where do they make people look at them? have they studied the psychological effect in real time? i didnt think you had to look anywhere though.

They already ARE mandated.

What is reprehensible is FORCING a woman to look at the ultrasound and be told exactly what's happening...."This is the heartbeat...blah blah"....for someone who's aborting for medical reasons..that would be heartbreaking.

For those of us who aborted for other reasons? It changes nothing.
So all it does is hurt those who are being medically forced to make a tough decision.
