Contracts are like waves of pressure and they hurt. Braxtons Hicks contractions are like tightening of the belly. Neither one of these last for just a second. They normally last a min. then (with contractions) you have 3-10 mintues between depending on what stage your at. With BH contractions there is an undefined amount of time between them. Normally your belly gets really tight for a minutes and then sometimes you don't even get another one. If you are feeling sharp pains that last a second... you have a ligament that is stretching... which is normal and has nothing to do with labor.
