How long before your preemie came home did they tell you..

posted 22nd Apr
that he was coming home. I have a 30 weeker as most of ya know, and I was just wondering. They have taken his PIC Line out! YAY! and he is 4lbs 7oz now and he has been on just room air for the last 3 almost 4 days, and is taking two bottles a day, and the other feedings are by feed tube. They are talking about trying the open crib thing tomorrow or thursday, and I was just wondering if they give u like a weeks notice or something. He will be 5 weeks old on saturday (cant beleive it) and I kinda asked this question before, but just wondering. Thanks!

I had a 34 weeker and he just had to meet some minor requirements before I was able to take him home.. Of course he had to pass the hour apnea test while in the carseat.. He was never on a ventilator so that wasn't an issue. He'd been successfully treated for his jaundice and he was eating regularly.. All he had to do was gain enough weight to hit the 5 lb mark and he did that w/in 6 days in the NICU so i was able to take him home then.. I'm sure it's all solely based on criteria he has to meet as opposed to a specific time..

If everything is good, they may let him go home when he reaches 5 lbs.

Is it just me or do y'all notice that the majority of preemies in NICU are male?

Yea, weight is not really a issue anymore in the nicu regarding when they come home, but it is true girls tend to do better than boys, but at my nicu there are more girls than boys

I have noticed especially w/ this site more mommy's to boy's have preemies. When my son was there, I saw more boy's than girls. I guess girls do...do better.hmmm

I'm still waiting for my son to come home. He was a 36 weeker but they say his lungs were only 34 weeks. He was 5lb 9oz at birth, but with under developed lungs. I wish I knew when he was coming home, but they did tell me to expect gestation date. He's down to a rate of 26 breaths on the vent now, and room air only (yay!) and they may be taking his art line out soon, and he's at 12 cc's ever 3 hours by feed tube now.

I, too, have noticed it seems there are more boys than girls in the nicu, but I have heard that caucasian male babies do tend to do worse than females or any other raced male.

It could be one of several factors really..

You can get a UTI (like me - @ 25weeks) and it could start up contractions.. You could have a naturally "weak" cervix.. You could develop pre-eclampsia which is life threatening and can only be cured along with the birth of your baby.. numberous others - I'm sure I'm missing out on some of the more obvious ones but.. babies are born premature everyday and its so amazing how adaptable the human body can be in situations like that

mine came at 34 wks was 6lbs 10oz and stayed in the NICU for 2wks... I know most hospitals wont let them leave if they are under 5lbs, and he will probly have to be off the feeding tube. That is what I had to wait on with my daughter, but I was told the day before.

I delivered at 26 weeks due to Ecoli bacteria infection. By the time I got to the ER i was 3 cm dialated. And it most likely came from nasty TACO BELL!!!
