Homemade Baby Food - Chat/Advice/Etc.

posted 21st Apr
I know there are quite a few "chat" threads out there --- I would be interested in seeing if a "Homemade Baby Food Chat" would be successful. I know I am so proud that Kailyn exclusively eats foods I prepare, and I am always up for tips and stories about what others do concerning preparation/storing/thawing/feeding/etc! I also see a lot of people considering making their own food - so it would be nice to have a thread they could refer to!   Cant hurt to try!

So far I have made (and Kailyn has had): Green Beans, Peas, Carrots, Yellow Squash, Zucchini, Apples, Bananas, Pears, Avocado, and Papaya. Next we will be doing winter squashes and probably mangos.

I rely a lot on wholesomebabyfood.com and the book "First Meals" by Annabel Karmel.

There are some differences in how to make the food depending on what food it is. But, generally, you clean/peal/cut the fruit/veggie - then steam it - then puree it. By doing it this way you are in complete control of the texture and you know exactly what ingredients are going into your food and your baby's belly. Once you have it pureed you can feed it fresh or freeze it (in ice cube trays for easy portioning). Then you take the number of cubes needed and thaw them and feed baby!

There are some foods that are baked instead of steamed, and some foods it helps to strain them after pureeing... but, generally it is a pretty easy process that saves money IMO.

when i have the time and feel up to it i enjoy making baby food too... i've only made a few things- carrots, parsnip, broccoli, mashed up avocado and banana...

lemme say- he did not care for the broccoli much, but when i mixed it with rice cereal it helped a little, but if i mixed it with some carrots it helped a LOT .. so.. yes, i got my boy to eat broccoli at 4+ months old haha!

he really liked the avocado and also really liked the parsnip, which tasted similiar to a carrot, in my opinion..and of course, he loves carrots..

oh yea- i also have and use the book "first meals" that you mentioned..

I really want to make Lydia's foods when she's ready for them.  Do you just get a regular steamer and blender?  Or do you need something special?  Munchkin makes a baby food maker  thingy.  It's cheap.  Is it no good?

Yep, regular steamer and you can use a regular blender or a food processor (Cuisiart, Magic Bullet, etc.). I don't know anything about the Munchkin baby food maker so I don't know if it's any good or not.
