re: Homemade Baby Food - Chat/Advice/Etc.

Might be a silly q...
My Bai will be 5 months tomorrow, she's eating cereal and veg, I give her purity #1, what I wanted to know is would it be okay if I just liquidized the veg and made it myself for her? They say purity is nothing added, so wouldn't it be the same? Coz you only get butternut, sweet potato and carrot. Are there any no-no's etc?
Glad I found this thread!!! I wanna always make Bai's food myself, I just think it's better!

I guess since no one answered my question, no one knew the answer so I figured I'd share what I did. I mashed up the avocado and put it through a metal strainer, added a little breast milk, mixed it up and put it in the ice trays with cover and in the freezer right away. It was still green this morning

I just had to come and brag somewhere it will be appreciated. I just made: apple sauce (from baked apples), butternut squash, pumpkin and sweet potatoes. I really want to give my LO a green vegetable next and the forth day for something new (we're now on avocado) will be on Thursday. I bought green beans. Any suggestions on the best way to prepare them?

What appliances do you ladies use to make food? DH wants to ask his mom for what we'll use for Christmas. He wants this: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/beaba-babycook/
I'm not too hot on it though from the reviews. Wouldn't a food processor and maybe steamer work best? If you have specific make/model suggestions I would love it. I see some processors recommended on wholesomebabyfood.com but no steamers (and I trust BG reviews more, lol). Thanks!

i use a rice cooker with a veggie steamer attachment, and to puree I use the Bullet. Best infomercial purchase EVER!

I use a double tier steamer and mash the food with a pestle. If it isn't mashable, then I throw it in the blender. I mean, I didn't feel like I needed to go get stuff I didn't already have. I think a blender is great because you can fit so much more it in than a food processor the bullet. I have those gadgets, just think the blender fits the volume I make better.
I also have a food mill but have never used it because my son is still a puree food kinda baby.

Oh wait I just thought of something you might really want to get that you don't alraedy. "baby cubes" Basically they are like ice trays but BPA free. I dont know if that is important to you but was high on my priority list. They also have individual caps which is very awesome. Also, ziploc makes 8 ounce BPA free tupperware and those are handy. If you are making big batches like I do, you'll want at least 30 individual storage bins. You could also get glass I suppose. I don't recommend baggies or commerical baby food containers because most have BPA in them.

Thanks for the suggestions!!!

And I was looking at something similar to those trays for freezing breastmilk. Maybe I'll get some now since they'll have more uses.

I use a metal steamer basket (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=10164354) and I recently bought this little food processor because it has a glass bowl and I don't have to worry about BPA and I love it!!!! http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.item.K22092.desc.Technique-350-Watt-Mini-Chopper-with-Glass-Bowl-Storage-Lid

I actually used the blender to make butternut squash before and wasn't too happy. It had a hard time blending the whole thing and then the result was way too watery.

Really? I always cut up my foods enough steaming so they will steam faster. I have never had a problem with the blender getting stuff pureed. I have a cuisinart blender though.
Did you add water to the blender?

I actually had it mashed up because I got the butternut squash out with a fork after baking it and I did add breast milk. Maybe I put in a little too much.

I stopped adding breast milk to foods because we tore through my whole backup freezer stash in about a month. Now I have no extra in case of days that I don't pump enough at work or if something comes up. I guess now that my LO is 9 months he can always get by on solids and water if there is an off day.
