Abortion debate.. Should the father have a say in it?

posted 20th Mar '12
So I came across this article on facebook and want to know what your opinion is on the subject.

For those of you that don't want to read the article, but get the overview:
the man and his wife had 3 kids already, and the wife got preg w/their 4th. They were originally going to keep the baby, but the mother ultimately decided she wanted an abortion. The father did not, and the mother did it anyway.

So here's my question for you ladies.. did she have the right to do what she wanted b/c the child is in her body? Or should the father had the option to take care of the child after she had it b/c it is, in fact, a part of him as well?

I don't think they should. I don't feel that any woman should be forced to carry a child that they do not want. I do think that women should take the fathers opinion into consideration, depending on the situation, but it should always be ultimately the woman's choice. Its her body.

It would be nice for abortion to be a mutual decision but it doesn't always work out that way and the scales are tipped in the mother's favor since it's her body. Ultimately I don't believe a woman should have to carry a pregnancy she doesn't want no matter what man's opinion might be against it, although it's also sad that she would completely discount the father's feelings on the matter.

No, he should not.

As much as I feel for a man that wants a baby that a woman has aborted, it's still HER who would have to go through pregnancy and labor. And as much as a man may say, "well, I'll just take care of it when it's born!"

....it usually falls on the woman.

I've never been in the situation myself so I can't say how the woman really feels when she's in that situation. As it is now, I think the man should have a say. I mean yes, it is her body. BUT it's also his DNA in there... growing... creating life.

But what gives her the full right to decide when it's not just her child?
What about "equal right"?

I believe the father should have had a say.
I believe that unless a mother was raped or it is life threatening to HER to continue the pregnancy then the father should always have a say.

But, that's just my opinion! (:

This is exactly how I feel.

I completely agree. Getting pregnant isn't one sided, and I don't think that decision should be either.

yes and no.
I would talk to my husband if I wanted an abortion and seriously consider his feelings. but in the end it is up to me

Because its a fetus and not a child. Its her body and not his. Forcing a woman to carry a pregnancy to term is not a good idea for the mother and possibly the child.

What if a rapist decided to force a woman to keep the baby he impregnated her with? Not a good situation. You see what I mean? Abortion isn't cut and dry.

I think it is just as much the father's child and if the father wanted to pay for all the medical expenses and take compelte care of the mother while she carried I think the mother should have carried the child and then just signed away her rights as a parent adn let the father have the baby.

In Most Cases that's my opinion! There are exceptions when I think the mother should have complete choice and unfortuneatly, we can't put laws in place to make people act right and behave like adults so I think the laws should stay the same and the chioce be left up to the mother, but we should have some sort of legal process the fathers can go through if they want to keep their children.

So what happens if they can't come to an agreement? Then what?
