A Preemie Success Story

posted 21st Apr
In early April 2001, my mother's water broke, much too early. She had laid down in bed when it was my bedtime (I was 11 at the time) and I heard her scream from the next room that her water had broken. At that point in her pregnancy, she was 25 weeks.

She was admitted into the hospital, with her legs high into the air. The two weeks she was like that, both my brother and my mom had developed an infection, and if my mom was going to start contracting--then they would have to deliver my brother. Luckily, she was at one of the best hospital's in NH, with an awesome L&D and NICU just a few floors apart.

On April 20th, my youngest brother Dilyn entered this world 13 weeks early, weighing only 2lbs 4oz, and about 10 inches long or so. My mother couldn't even hold him, and he was rushed off to the NICU immediately.

He was hooked up to all sorts of monitors and tubes, and at 11 years old, you really don't know what all those things really are. My stepfather could hold him in one hand easily, thats how small he was.

Although he had an assortment of health problems at birth ranging from lung problems to jaundice, he went home after 15 weeks in the NICU.

My family was told he wouldn't have a regular mentality, he might not walk or even survive past the age of 1.

But here is the light at the end of the tunnel--

Yesterday, my brother celebrated his 7th Birthday! He is perfect now! He is a little on the short end (but the doctor says he's okay) and has trouble reading and comprehending a little bit, but other than that, he a normal, perfect 7 year old!

So ladies with preemies--- there is a light at the end of the tunnel, I thought I would share my brother's awesome success story!

Im glad hes doing well. I wondered why they would say he would never walk?! 10 inches is absolutely tiny for a 27 weeker, normally thats the length of a 20 weeker. Im surprised they both survived infection too, its standard practice here in the UK to pump a woman full of antibiotics the moment waters break, at the slighest sign of infection you have to deliver immediately as it kills the baby within days. To have held on for 2 full weeks with infection is just miraculous! Your mom and brother must truly be a real life miracle!! You must be so grateful and proud to watch him growing up so active an healthy
