my babe is two days old...we were on regular feedings every two hours...then last night she wouldn't sleep and kept wanting to be on the breast...now she's finally asleep and has been for about 6 hours....is this normal and ok? or should i wake her to eat?....

and also...my nipples get sooo sore and hurt really bad when she's feeding. any tips? or anything that will make them hurt less? and how do i know if she's even getting much out of them???

Unless she is having trouble maintaining her weight or other medical issues I would let her sleep.

well, i believe she is doing quite well. she did quite a few poops last night, and even her first pee that i noticed. so i'm assuming that she's getting enough feeding?

i don't know. i didn't imagine it would be this nerve racking! but she WAS awake for the longest time...so i am going to let her sleep...

I use lansinoh lanolin breast cream. you can use it before and after you nurse(just don't put too much on right before nursing cause they tend to slip off  ) They have different brands of it but this is just what I use.

I forgot to add ... make sure you have breastpads on when you use this stuff cause it can stain bras !!

I would say make sure you are applying the lansinoh after every feeding at the very least.

Sounds like your little one was "cluster feeding" and then went off to sleep! Although...at two days, I would be waking her by now to feed again. Let me go check something and I will be right back...

yeah..she wouldn't stop. her mouth kept moving making THAT face that she wanted her boob...but a nurse also told me that they can sometimes just use you as a pacifier.

http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/newman.shtml

This is a SUPER resource...has handouts, pictures, and video to help.

When she is nursing...is she sucking, pausing (to swallow, sounds like a click sometimes when they are so little) and then continuing? If so, sounds like a good latch. I would look at some of the pictures and videos on there, though.

Do you have a good lactation consultant to call or visit? I can't find anything about how long infants as small as yours should wait between feedings. But...I do know that she may actually sleep more than normal if she is not latching on properly, therefore not getting enough to drink.

Has your milk come in yet?

Oh! and there's a phone number on that website, too...if you wanted to call. That is NOT the same person (lactation consultant) I use, but she has his website listed as a link off of her website...and I know she uses his handouts in the classes she teaches.

Keep us posted!

she does about two sucks...then a pause...then sucks again...but i don't really hear her swallowing...but if she wasn't getting anything she'd probably just quit and cry, right??

It can be pretty quiet. Almost a "sigh" too, or a faint "click" if I am remembering correctly.

Glad you liked the link, it's a lot of really good info!

I agree I always had it right by me when I would sit down to breastfeed so that I wouldn't forget. I would usually just use it before if they were getting really sore ,like when he would nurse constantly during a growth spurt. Good luck .... sore nipples are no fun.
