If the breast shield doesn't work, maybe look through the phone book or call your gyn or local hospital to ask about a lactation specialist/nurse. You might need the extra help since it sounds like he's more used to bottle than breast.

I had to use a shield for several weeks, then he got to where he would latch perfectly at about 1 month old.

You have to work with it when they have latch issues, it can be tiresome, but it's definitely worth it.

Make sure you try to get him latched without it before you put the shield on each time, that way he is still familiar with the feel of skin instead of silicone.

If he is not latching on at all, get the breast shields. They are a thin plastic shield that goes on your nipples so that the baby has a easier time latching and thinks it's a bottle. After putting the shield on try to express some milk into the nipple of the shield and on the tip so he can taste it. Hold your baby to the breast, rub the nipple across his lips until he opens his mouth, when he does put the nipple in the mouth and litely hold his head to the breast so he can figure out what it is. It may take a few trys and you expressing some milk into his mouth with your other hand. He will get it. Youcan always call your hospital where you had him and ask for post-pardum floor and ask to speak with the lactation consultent.

yeah, hell latch on and suck for a few seconds and then he stops. i think he just knows its not a bottle and i wasnt able to breastfeed while he was in the hospital so he got used to the bottle first.. ill try the breast shield though, i cant believe i didnt know it could be used for breastfeeding haha.... if i had known i wouldve used it with my daughter too

ok you are going to laugh, I mean really laugh when I tell you this but this was the only way I could get my son to nurse in the beginning, I would take a shower with him and it would sooth him and he would latch on. I had a shower chair that I sat on in there and let the water hit his hips down to his leggs and he would go to town nursing. He wouldn't nurse outside the shower for several weeks but he finally started to.
Good luck, its a tuff thing going thru the pumping to bottle feed, and it can be stressing!!
