Not "Free" at all.
Most people pay a monthly premium. If your low income then you get subsidized and children under 5 yrs old get it free.
I think in Alberta, the average person with an average income pays $133.00 every 3 mnths.

Do you have to pay the premiums out of pocket? OHIP doesn't work that way.

Yes. I personally dont have to pay anything because I have my 2 kids and am not working. My husband was covered at work but then he switched jobs and he had to be employed 3 months before his new job would allow him to be covered. But in between he had to pay $133.00 every 3 months and if you dont pay your bill they dont come after you but eventually it will catch up with you, like applying for loans and such. That happend to my BIL.
I think his total bill was over $1000.
Most "Good" employers will cover their employees.

How is it with you guys??

It's my understanding that in Ontario, the premiums are taken off of income tax, so we still pay it, but not directly out of our pocket, it's taken before we even see it.

That seems like a good way to do it. That way its not another bill that needs to be paid every month. Im greatful that our health care system is the way that it is. I neve rknew until joinig BG how the U.S system works. Makes me appreciate living in Canadajust a little bit more.

I hear you on that.

Seeing some women walk away with thousands of dollars in bills just from giving birth... wow I'm glad to be a Canadian.
