re: "DELAYED" SOLIDS (6m+) support and info

posted 7th Mar '12
I'm excited to see all the new people in here and everyone who is on board!

I was a part of the original thread but I'm not delaying solids anymore since both my kids are toddlers. I delayed with my oldest until 13.5 months and started my youngest at 8 months though she didn't take much to it until 9 months.

I did! would totally piss me off too. Once SIL (14) gave Sof some of her strawberries, she was about 6 months and JUST starting to be let to try food. It pissed me off SO much that she didn't ask us first, especially because they are high allergen foods, have small seeds on, etc etc.
Another reason why the in law's family don't watch my daughter

hey mama! welcome! glad you found us. My pedi wanted me to start solids at 4m   and told me STUPID things like he won't learn to chew or won't know how to handle food and different textures .. blah blah blah. She about died when he was still EBF at 8m and by his 11m appt she didn't even ask (even though he was EBF until 12m). She just looked at him and said "well, you obviously don't have a problem eating" (because he was kinda chubby). HA!

and about the sugar thing, I would be super pissed about that too.

At what age were your kiddos using utensils? Or plates for that matter, Ren dumps it all off his plate.

I think it's closer to 2 or so. My daughter is 2 and usually uses her fork/spoon, but she still dips her hands into her food if it isn't fast enough, haha. That seems pretty normal, because her teachers seem to think that's fine.

My pedi said the same thing at her 4 month appt. She will be 6 months tomorrow & weighs 20 lbs.... I'm quite sure shes nutritionally satisfied without cereal lol

Quoting dream:" same with Finn! and I just don't get why people want to start so early. It's just so much work! I've ... [snip!] ... baby food (even just getting stuff out of a jar and warming it up) and having to sit there and spoon feed a baby. no thanks.  "

You're telling me. I was reading a mom page on fb and they're all freaking out if certain food was doing certain things and if feeding them this food was okay and how much and how warm and OMG could my kid be allergic?

It was making my head hurt.

So naturally I butted in and said Thank God I didn't have to deal with those promlems, I delayed until 8.5mos
Which, totally freaked them out. LOL
So I posted links and this thread and told them babies don't biologically need any of that.

Hahah Sof does that too. She used to like, swipe her hand all over the tray and it'd fly everywhere.
If a server or someone asks if I'd like to give her a bowl, I'm like, no, she'll throw it at someone, most likely me.
If she has bits on her actual tray she's golden though.

the worst/funniest is when she cries to get out of her high chair, so I put her on my lap while I finish, and she just takes my food off of my plate and eats it!! She HAS to have what we're having, I think we'd have been bludgeoned to death with sippy cups by now had we not done BLW.

Tonight for dinner we had chicken, potatoes and carrots. J loved it all. She got a bit gaggy on the chicken so I took what was left on the plate. She actually did a good job with re chewing it after she gagged.

Finn has always used utensils since he started eating more "regular" meals around 18 months or so. Other than finger foods like apple slices or a banana. Now that he can talk, he asks for "-poon" or "smurf" .. hahaha
