re: "DELAYED" SOLIDS (6m+) support and info

posted 5th Mar '12
Lorelei is 7 1/2m and still no solids. She's gotten a bit of apple sauce, and a couple of sweet potato fries from her big sister but she really sin't into eating, I think she's more curious so not pushing it here.

She can sit well on her own, but still has trouble picking up small objects (she palms them still) but she has fun trying and playing. We don't do puree or spoon feed, if she can feed herself, then we don't serve it.

I guess we are a delaying solids! Didn't even think of it as a delay, just waiting for her to show me she is ready

Because he was ebf until 12 months and didn't touch food until close to 14 months. He started nibbling table food as snacks but never fully ate a meal until the end of breastfeeding. I let him decide when he was ready.

ah ok. yeah, similar for me.
EBF for 12m and then he could try whatever he could get his hands on.

Honestly, I have no idea. NO IDEA. It's flying by way too fast.

And you, are you ready for the ride of 2?

I'm really interested to try this out with my Lo, she is only 2 months but already i have had a few people "suggest" things about solids to me and it annoys me so much.
My mum has already said things like "oh it's not long now till she can start solids" And already ppl have already suggested i put baby rice in her milk to help her sleep longer   things like that really annoy me!

I started my 2 older boys on solids around 4/5 months, but i never actually knew about delaying it until they are actually really ready, i always thought 4 months was the norm, so i am very interested in trying this out.
After reading most of the info it really makes sense.

I think waiting until he was ready is what makes Ren such a good eater. He eats everything and he loves his fruits and veggies more then anything else. I wish more people understood babies don't need food at 4 months!

same with Finn! and I just don't get why people want to start so early. It's just so much work! I've very rarely ever fed Finn. When he could eat, he fed himself, usually with a spoon or fork. Even now, if he gets stuff on his face, he often asks for something to wipe it with (and I'm not a crazy clean freak or anything, so he didn't get that from me. lol).

and he doesn't throw his food over the side either. When he's done, he says "all done" and asks to get down. Not that things don't end up on the floor occasionally, but it's nothing major and usually either an accident or because he's done and I wasn't paying attention.

but man, I'd go crazy preparing baby food (even just getting stuff out of a jar and warming it up) and having to sit there and spoon feed a baby. no thanks.

wooo hooo! a thread that doesn't make me feel crazy for thinking my LO shouldn't start food yet! yaaaaay!!! I was told by a friend of my mom's the other day, that if I didn't start my LO on food before she was a year I would "have a 5 year old who throws food and doesn't eat".... UMMMM... OOOKKK.... My LO will be 6 months tomororw, and is EBF. She seems interested when we eat, but IMO that is because she is in the "grab and put in mouth" phase, so for all she knows, we are putting awesome toys in our mouth, and she's missing out. People tend to tell me I'm "teasing her" by not offering her solids yet, but I don't see how, seeing as she has NO IDEA what food is! She's a booby baby, and I'm happy to keep her that way for a while now.
I'm sorry this post is long already, but I have one more thing I wanted to add.
I went to the fair a couple weeks ago, and a friend of mine put powdered sugar on my DD's tongue, mouth, whatever (I didn't see it happen). NOBODY understood why I was so mad about this. First off, SUGAR?!?!?! REALLY!?!!? Not my idea of the best thing to try first. Also, I was honestly upset (and still am) that someone took that 'first time trying something' experience away from me. I know that in the grand scheme of things, my LO is FINE, it's OVER, and it did not kill her, but I'm still upset... am I crazy???
wow, if someone actually read all of this THANK YOU! lol
