Levothyroxine side effects?

posted 26th Feb '12
Ive just recently started taking Levothyroxine for my hypothyroid (since I think feb. 14ish) and I have noticed a severe change in my mental health state and I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

My emotions have just been off the wall, I constantly get angry, sad, feel like I just hate myself, and I have had issues with self confidence before but now they have become so much worse.

The medication has (from what I know so far) only helped me with my always feeling cold sensation, but I still have been feeling fatigue and some weight gain, hair loss, weird period cycles...Irritability and depression are a symptom of hypothyroidism but I wasn't having those symptoms before I started...now I am....well i don't *think* depression is what I've been experiencing but I've just been having normal girl emotions x100 and its been so unbearable and tolling on me that I'm considering asking my doctor to take me off of this medication...I don't feel like I am in control of my emotions or thoughts anymore...

but then again maybe the medication isn't working and its not the Levo, its just me?

You should talk to your doctor about a change.

Give it exactly two weeks to make sure..and then if you're still having the side effects with very little or no improvement on the thyroid aspect..then INSIST on a change.

I didn't do well on levothyroxine so I now take Armour Thyroid and so far it is amazing compared to levo. Doctors will try not to let you take it because of invalid reasons but i can assure you that the only reason is because they get some sort of financial benefit from proscribing synthroid/ Levothyroxine. Do some research and see if you want to try it.

Alright....I just feel like after starting this drug that when I get angry & emotional I feel like the thoughts in my head aren't even my own anymore because they are so out there and not me at all. Thanks for the advice I will wait the 2 weeks, that should be in a couple days actually

That's weird that they don't like giving it out but thanks I will research that. Anything to make me feel normal again! Thank you (:

Yeah. The reason i say two weeks ..is that some meds do not work fully until you've given them "the old college try" so to say.

As long as you've given the whole two weeks..your doctor should just agree with you. If he doesn't..then YOU know you tried and can insist.

wow this website is perfect for what I've been going through.

"It’s a common scenario for hypothyroid patients, especially when you are undiagnosed due to your doctor’s over-reliance on a faulty TSH range, or treated with thyroxine T4-only medications: You go to the doctor; you complain about your depression, or your anxiety, or your emotional swings, or your inability to concentrate…and onto your doctor’s favorite anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, lithium, or bi-polar med you go—beginning with the freebies on the shelf from his friendly and suited pharmaceutical rep. Sound familiar??
But the problem with this scenario is that your depression or anxiety or other mental health problem is not a unique and unrelated illness. It’s most likely due to having a low free T3, the active thyroid hormone, and/or adrenal insufficiency. And this is especially common for patients treated with Synthroid, Levoxyl, Eltoxine, Levothyroxine and other T4-only medications.
And this problem is not limited to depression. Low thyroid hormones, and the common occurrence of sluggish, poorly functioning adrenals, can play a role in a variety of emotional and behavioral symptoms and disturbances, including anxiety, excessive fear, mood swings like bi-polar, rage, irritability, paranoid schizophrenia, confusion, dementia, obsessive/compulsive disorders, and mental aberrations.
So if your physician or psychiatrist failed to check your thyroid function with the correct lab tests (free T3 and free T4, plus antibodies), and your adrenal function with a 24 hour adrenal saliva test, and instead prescribed his or her favorite band-aid psychotrophic medication, you are left with medications that can include unneeded fluoride, that can clash with your other meds, that can make your hypothyroid worse, or can leave you with classic side effects…besides the cost."
