Not talking yet at 19 months?

posted 16th Apr
Hello! My name is Michele. I am a 25 year old mom of 3.

My DD is almost 19 months old and she is still not talking. She can say "dada", "mama" and "whatsh" but not very clearly. They are other things she trys to say but they all have a "sh" sound to the end of it. (Like earsh, eyesh, whatsh, hairsh, and nosesh.) Dh and I are starting to wonder if she might have some sort of hearing problem. Has anyone been through something like this? Am I just worring over nothing?

My son has issues with his speech but his doctor didn't start saying anything about speech therapy until he was about 2. My younger son who will be 2 in July is using a lot more words than my older son but not really putting anything together yet, so we will see in a couple months if we need to get him started on speech therapy. If it is something that is really bothering you or worrying you I would just call your pediatrician and ask what they think  Good luck

It probably wouldnt hurt to get her checked out just in case! Either an ear specialist or maybe a speech therapist would probably be able to answer that alot better. If she does have something that could be easily fixed, it would be better to know now instead of later you know? But I know all kids talk at their own pace. My daughter started saying words at nine months and we havent been able to shut her up since she was 14 months old and started with the sentences. But I babysit a little boy who is four days older than her, they just turned two and he still only says a handful of words and doesn't even make sentences at ALL... like not even two word combinations yet. And I talk to them both the same all day long. There's nothing wrong with him hearing wise, , so maybe your daughter is just taking her time!

My Niece is 2 years and 4 months and is still talking very little, though her vocab is growing everyday.I know she understands what is being said, but just doesn't talk real words much. When she does talkit is mostly babble.Might be someting normal, but never hurts to talk to your DR.

Kids learn to talk at different rates. Katelyn is talking in full sentences and singing songs and counting, and her friend who is two weeks older than her only says mama and baby. Some kids won't talk until they are sure they are doing it right, and some just don't feel like they need too. My one friend is a stay at home mom and her little girl hardly said anything until she was 2 and half and she got a baby brother, because there was just no need. Having her evaluated might ease your fears and can catch a hearing problem or something similiar, but she's probably fine. One thing I have noticed though, is that Katelyn talks all day long, because I literally talk to her all day long. We narrate pretty much everything that happens during the day. Her friend who doesn't talk, doesn't get talked too, her mom just says uh huh or yeah....because she is super busy. And it takes longer to pick up language if you don't hear it. Good luck!!

dont panic!! my eldest is 3 and a half and cant talk properly!! he has seen a specialist and i fine just progressing slower than others when it comes to speech!!! he cant say certain letters so most of his words come out funny, not many people can understand him, my other child is 18 months and he only says mama, dada and nana
