Biting!!

posted 13th Apr
My son is 16 months, his recent thing is biting. He does it all the time when he's mad, bored, playing with other kids, tired. I don't know what to do except say no biting.. I have one on the way so i hope this will pass. But any suggestions on how to break this habit??

Yes... anytime your child touches inappropriately, tell him, "ouch that hurts" (in an even voice). Then tell him, "Touch me like this..." and show him how... Tell him that it is nice when he touches like you are showing him...

Hunter does the same thing! I say"No biting, that hurts mommy" in a nice tone.

this is from therapist that comes to our home each week she said when your son goes to bite take your thumb and first finger and give a little squeeze on his cheeks, try it on yourself and you'll see why this works. This is not abusive its justa teaching method.

I would ask to see that therapist's liscense. It doesn't make sense to try and curb inappropriate physical contact with inappropriate physical contact... !!!!   You are suppose to teach them the 'right' thing to do, not show them that you can do it, but not them... my goodness!

I am completely against spanking a child so when my daughter started this around the same age as your child I had no clue what to do. EVERYONE told me to bite her back. Not really hard, but hard enough to make her cry a little, but not hard enough to leave a mark. After trying everything I one day bit her back right after she bit me she cried for a minute and to this day she has never bitten anyone and she is 5.

When my son did this, I would give him a stuffed animal or a pillow and tell him to tell it how angry/sad/mad he was..so he would learn to take his frustrations out on something that doesnt feel. When he gets angry now he still grabs a pillow and squeezes as tight as he can!
