Can people with factor V be on certain types of birth control?
Before I found out that I had factor V I had the nuvaring. I'm just so scared of getting pregnant again. Condoms are getting expensive.... and old lol

I've heard that you're not really supposed to take any hormonal types, but I think it depends on your OB honestly.

I have factor v and with my history of clots, I can't be on any hormonal bc. Paragaurd is/was my only option but that didn't work for me.

I have hetero-MTHFR. The 3 doctors that I have talked to, don't think it's an issue, but still want me taking vitamins and baby aspirin. I'm getting to the point where I'm sick of TTC anyway.. so having all of this on top of it, is getting tiresome.

What's the point of taking all of these every day, if they aren't going to help me prevent another loss?

I have a friend with Factor V. She took the pill (not minipill) before her first two kids, then was on Mirena between #2 and #3. Not sure what she's going to do after she has #3. She doesn't have to take aspirin to be on it. I have APS so I can only have Paraguard, but my uterus is tilted/twisted so I'm not a good candidate for it anyway. I much prefer nothing at all anyway.

So glad to have found this thread! My name is Stephanie and I have protein S deficiency! I started getting clots around 19 years old when I was in college. However it wasn't until 2 weeks after I had my son that I got a clot and decided I should do something now that I was a mommy! So I went to a hematologist and found out I had it. That was in 2009. I'm on 7.5 mg of Coumadin every day to stay therapeutic and my husband and I have decided we are going to start TTC again in may. I am so excited but so nervous!! I will have to start shots before I start TTC! Glad to find others who are going through similar situations!

It's because the risk of a blood clot is higher when on hormonal birth control, even higher if you smoke. So if you have any condition that predisposes you to developing clots, it's an even higher risk. So they advise against it.

Just curious, why would you have to start shots before TTC? They just don't want you on the coumadin while trying or what?

I was wondering about that too. My hematologist had told me if I needed to be on Coumadin it was fine to take TTC and then after confirmed pregnancy switch to Lovenox.

Thats what I thought too. But then different doctors have different beliefs.

They just want to be sure I'm off Coumadin when I conceive so that I'm not on it at all while pregnant, also they want to make sure I'm doing well on the heparin because I get a lot of clots, I've still had them on Coumadin which is why I'm on a pretty high dosage I think my doc is just extra cautious with me and I don't mind it.
