Vaginal birth after C-section

posted 13th Apr
i am nearly 30 weeks pregnanct and goin along fine with my appts and i am in australia

I had a c-section with my 1st daughter she is now 5 1/2. So its been 5 yrs since my c-section ... I went to my last hospital appointment (as in australia you do shared care with your Dr and a hospital.. which i chose to do) and the Dr asked me about my choice of labor... since i have had a previous c-section i can chose to have another c-section.

I want to try for a natural labor.. i have wanted to do this since before i was pregnant with my dughter. He told me the risks of my uterus splitting which i already knew and i was ok with those odds as i know it can be done quite successfuly and if anything happens they can wip me into do a c-section.

but this Dr has freaked the crap out of me.. he has urged me to have another c-section because if i do labor naturally and my uterus does split the hospital does not have a dedicated theatre so if someone is in surgery i may not be able to get in straight away and bubs and i could die.

So now i am freaking out i really want to have a natural labor but i am concerned if something does go wrong ... then yeah

So i wanted to know has anyone had a natural labor after a c-section and what was your experiences?

u would think being in the 7th largest city in australia that we would have a dedicated theate but nooooo... grrr

Well, I'm not sure the exact statistics, but the chance of you and the baby dying are pretty unlikely. I think that's stupid that they can't have a surgeon there close to you just in case. Isn't your doctor qualified to do the c-section, so that if something goes wrong during the natural childbirth, your doctor will be right there to perform the c-section?

Anyway, my mom had a successful VBAC. She said it was her best birth experience (out of 6 kids, 3 vaginal and 3 c-sections). Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I haven't had a vbac, but I know 4 or 5 women who have-- very succesfully. I know doctors tell you about the risk of the uterus rupturing, but I don't personally know anyone who has had this happen.

I appluad you for going for the vbac if that's your decision.

the issue is not that he is not qualified
the issue is there may be no opperating theatre available at the hospital.

for example when i was in labor with my daughter i had to wait for the c-section for 4 hours as some moron had somehow managed to back over both of his legs with his boat and severe both of them with the blades of the motor

So if i do have a VBAC and have complications and need a c-section there is a chance there will be no theatre available.

i just had a c-section a little over a year ago with my son..I was given the choice of a c-section or VBAC as well but i was informed of the risks too..Im choosing to have a planned c-section in july at 39 weeks b/c im very scared and nervous about the risks, plus i basically just had a baby through a c-section..

Oh, I'd never heard of an operating theatre. I assume that means operating room? Well that's too bad.

I will probably end up doing a planned c-section with my next one. If you do rupture your uterus during a VBAC, I believe you cannot have any more kids. and that's just not a risk I want to take.

I had a c-section with my daugher and almost 6 years later had a successful v-bac with my son. My doctor induced me 12 days before my due date and things went very fast and very well. I went from 3 cm to 9 in about 45 minutes. I asked for my epidural just before they had checked my dialtion again-so I was able to receive one and my son was born after about 3 pushes. I am hoping to have a v-bac again this time, but I was informed that some of the rules regarding a v-bac have changed,at least at the hospitals in our area. The doctors are not allowed to induce now you have to go into labor on your own. So if I do not do so by 41 weeks than I would end up with another c-section.
My advice to you is just to read up as much as you can to make a decision you are comfortable with. My situation is a little different because,as my doctor put it,we know that my incision can withstand labor and delivery because it has before. Lots of luck
