Breastmilk decline from lack of hunger...

posted 3rd Feb '12
So Gunnar was born two weeks ago (six weeks early). My first week breastfeeding him/pumping I was purting out at least 120cc from eaxh breast every two hours. But since hes been home, my supply has gone down tremendously to about 15-25cc every two hours. I thimk its because I cant eat. dont have the stomach for food, if I think about it, I gag. I hear about all these breastfeeding moms that always feeling starved and cant get enough... Ugh.

Any moms ever have the same issue?
All my lact. consultant says is to eat. Easier said then done..

Does ANYTHING appeal to you?
I've heard of food aversions but not total, just specific.

Start drinking something like boost if eating is unappealing to you. If you aren't eating you have nothing to make milk with.

Honestly no. in the past 24hrs I've eaten turkey on whole wheat bread... Thats it. Even after eating that, I wanted to get sick. I've never felt this disgusted with food! It was so easy with my first child, I just dont understand what's different this time.

Most woman can still make milk even if they arent eating enough. However, your milk supply may be decreasing slightly... The questions you have to ask yourself are;
.Is your baby growing?
.Is he/she having enough wet diapers?
Those are the ONLY two ways to tell that you aren't making enough because pumping is not an indication of supply and neither is constant screaming or pulling away from the breast ect...

You can also take funagreek and blessed thistle to up your supply until you get your appetite back but unless he is losing weight ,I seriously would not worry about it.

I rarely ate after i had my son. I had a massive over supply of milk, but i did loose a huge amount of weight aswel.

Are you not able to feed from the breast yet? so you can stop pumping. He will be much better at getting the milk out himself and you're supply will go up to meet his needs.. whilst continuuing to pump often makes your supply run out.

heres the thing when he was in the NICU for a week the doc gave me an ultimatum of either being at the hospital around the clock to breast feed (which was impossible, I also have a 2yr old I had to share my time with) or I could pump and bottle feed him with out the feeding tube. So I guess you could say he has nipple confusion now. He doesn't want to work for it, he would rather have the bottle the easy way. I try and try to breastfeed before offering the bottle but it never works. So I'm stuck pumping...

Try a nipple shield for the time being if worse comes to worse but there are other methods to help as well. Oh and try pumping until you get your let down and then latch him.
My son didn't latch unti he was 3 months old... sometimes its something they have to learn and can take time. Also, try contacting your local Le Leche league and/or a LC. They should both be able to help with that.

I almost forgot but you can try getting a breastflow bottle in the mean time or start syringe feeding/cup feeding so he will stop being used to the bottle. I had to do all of this with my son and it took a lot of work but once they latch, it gets SO easy!

Syringe feeding:

^ This is what the hospital had my son do and they are one of the few hospitals in the country that are labeled as "baby friendly" and are trained in encouraging breastfeeding. I highly recommend this.
