Question about mixing formula/ breastmilk

My friend had her baby whom was born early and had a variety of problems. Well, she was pumping but can't anymore because she just had to have surgery due to a breast infection... pumping gave her a lot of issues. Well, she has now been offered donor milk which she is ok with but was told she can't mix breast milk with the high calorie formula's because it would be "too many calories". She would be switching off between the two for various reasons.


Is this possible? I have just never heard of it being bad to switch off before? Is this the case with Preemie formula?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but DD had BM mixed in with high calorie formula while they were switching her over to formula when I was slowing running out or BM. They did it to help her become used to the formula and also give her the benefits of BM.

I don't know how high her Neosure was at the time, but I think it was around 24-26 calories. She never gained weight well so that could be the reason why. She is now on 30 calories.

on a side note, that just doesn't make since sense BM is only 20 calories and preemie formula is started at 22 calories (at least with Neosure) and goes up to 30.

My kids ad both and were fine but they were not preemie.

Hers was born at 32 weeks so she was really early. I mean, if she can't give her child breastmilk it's ok too you know? I am just wondering because I had never heard of that and honestly, her baby is in damn good hands. She is an amazing mother. She pumped for the last 3 months while her child was in the NICU and has done everything she can you know? That's all a mother can do to ensure their child's safety. Its important that her child grow and thrive.

Well I just talked to her more and she said they were having to add stuff into her breastmilk even to get her to grow right. She was born early but had heart surgery too and has to have 2 other surgeries(her intestinal tract is outside of her body and she has a cleft palet).

She said it was due to the calories but maybe it was because of the fats?

aww the poor little thing. I can't imagine it's calories because the math just wouldn't make sense. I've never heard of calories higher than 30 but I know in the NICU they used to add something to DD's BM, I think it was human milk fortifier? Does she have to add it to both the formula and the BM?

Also how long is she being giving donor milk for? I thought it was only given in the NICU and only up to a certain size? I don't know much about it because it wasn't offered past a certain size when I went dry.

Well, her friends offered to pump for her plus I know of some resources where you can meet with a donor and get the milk screened ect... all for free. They are called human milk 4 human babies and Eats on Feets.
Yes they are internet based but they have directions on how to pasteurize the milk if you don't feel safe the milk can be made safe anyway, and you can get any donor you want screened :] Its just not well known because its taboo in most places which I don't understand... Donor milk has killed less babies world wide technically actually. If you feel safe it may be worth looking into. They have a facebook and you just post on their wall and ask for mamas in your local area to meet up with to get milk from ect... its safe and pretty cool. I would do it if I had needed it but at the same time, I would not have hesitated to give my son formula either.

Anyway that poor baby has been through a lot but damn she is an amazing fighter! All of these problems happened from Zoloft actually so the family is suing but i am just glad she is getting better you know? That's the most important part. I guess her heart condition calls for a lot of weird things such as managing her food intake and such. I think they are having to fortify the formula and milk with vitamins and stuff as well because of her intestinal tract.
