Should I be Worried?

posted 30th Jan '12
My son just turned 6 months old, he is 2 months corrected. We went to his Preemie graduation evaluation appointment, and they evaluated him mentally & physically. They said he is Physically 6months, So he has caught up on his weight & hieght and physically moving around & all like he would be if he wasn't a preemie. BUT, they said that he is mentally between 3 months & 5 months, but in most area's, he is 3 months & 27 days old? Im so confused & worried. Everyone says he will grow out of it, & he will catch up, but I still feel abit worried. BUT, i am proud of my lil man, he went from 3lbs 6oz & 16ins, to 16POUNDS! 3 OZ!! & 23in! But if anyone has been thru this, or knows of ways to help with teaching him new things, ANY support is welcome! They told me to play patty cake with him, sing to him, read to him, & talk to him... But i do that all the time & have been for months...

do you really hear what you're saying at all???

He is TWO moths adjusted age but measuring mentally at almost FOUR months old. That means he's ahead no matter how you slice it.

He's gestationally growing like he would if he were born full term. Physically that sounds about right. I wouldn't be too worried

This. He's doing better than expected. He's advanced for his adjusted age, which is what most preemies would be at.
Don't be worried.

My aunt had a 24-weeker, he doesn't have any issues now. He's a healthy happy 9 year old. He does go to speech therapy and he is very tall and skinny but other than that he's completely normal he was born at 1lbs 6 oz.

I would just keep stimulating him the best you can: read to him, talk to him, play with him. If you try to do tummy time get down to his level to talk to him. Peyton's favorite toys are the ones that light up.
