i think it's about that time

posted 11th Apr
for me to quit breastfeeding.
we've been going strong for about 14 months now, & i've always said i was going to keep it up until she's around two, but i don't think i'll make it that far.
she doesn't need the breast so much for food anymore, it's mostly just to get her to sleep.
she eats meals & drinks water & juice during the day, but the problem is bedtime..
it's like she CAN'T fall asleep without the breast. the second i take the boob out of her mouth she wakes her self up & throws a fit. She will cry, & cry, & then cry some more, toss & turn & then she stands up on the bed & throws herself onto my chest, her head slams in to my boobs!
it keeps both of us from getting a good night's sleep.
i've tried holding, cuddling, standing up & rocking her, but the second i lay her down she wakes up & wants the breast again.
So my question is how do i even start to begin weaning, when she has gotten so use to the breast for falling asleep?

I was lucky and didn't have to wean my toddler off of the breast--he rejected it finally when he was 16 months. Everything else food-wise was so much more interesting. Who wants plain breastmilk, right? Then again, I didn't nurse him to sleep very often, so I can't really help you with your situation...

Have you tried replacing the breastfeeding routine with something else comforting? A lullaby maybe, or something just as equally soothing?

i keep hoping that will happen to me, she'll just wean herself, but so far it hasn't, haha but there's still time.
yeah i've tried singing to her & things that i would think were comforting; she sometimes drifts off, but the second i put her down, she wakes up looking for the breast, & it's like a cycle, i'll pick her up again & she'll do the same thing over & over..the only way she'll fall & stay asleep is if i breastfeed her. it gets soo tiring & eventually i give in & breastfeed her.

Have you ever read the Baby Whisperer? I don't agree with 100% of stuff but the majority worked for my two kids. I think she recommends a pick up and put down technique but not sure? Good luck!

I think you did an amazing job! My son is only 6 months old, & he has 6 teeth already....so I'm thinking I will wean him around 9 months. I always thought I'd go 12 to 15 months, but he's already eating table food & such.

just if i mix it w. something..like oatmeal or cereal, i have to hide it in things..
she freakin hates it, if i give it to her in her cup she will take one little sip & throw it, & just starts saying wawawaww for water or jujujuuj for juice..

thats so pitiful
congrats on breastfeeding this long, tho, mama!!
hmm..i havent been there yet- i'm still breastfeeding my 6 month old and he's my first child..
it may seem a little old to give her a paci- but at night when my son wants to nurse while falling asleep, i cuddle him to my chest and slip a paci in his mouth.. and then when i lay him down in his crib i just pop the paci back in and pet him if he wakes up whining...
of cours,e you'll have to wean from the paci at some point..but maybe its a starting point? i dont know..but good luck mama!
