If you can't breastfeed then you can't breastfeed.. my best advice would be to talk someone in the la leche leage

It depends on what happened and why she could not BF.

Really just depends on what the problems were. But just b/c she couldn't, doesn't mean you won't be able too.

Don't give up. NO supplementing. Keep no formula in your home. It will be hard, but your LO will appreciate you giving him the best. GL mama! There is also a page on fb called The Leaky B@@b. There are TONS of bfing mamas on there ready to answer any questions you have or if you need help/encouragement.

Im just worried that he wont breast feed.Being a new parent there are alot of things i am curious about, and they say no question is a stupid question so i thought i would throw that out there and see what answers id get/what people have went through. And her baby had an infection that was causing him to not eat and when he went in icu he wasnt with her enough for her to keep trying.

Have you watched any video's on BF? Do some research so you know how to position baby, how to hold your nipple to get baby to latch, etc. Just try and educate yourself.

Ask for a lactation consultant at the hospital.

Remember baby only needs colostrum for the first few days. DO NOT freak if you take 4 days for your milk to come in. Baby will get what it needs either way.

BF babies nurse more than FF babies. If baby is hungry every hour, nurse. Don't think you are not giving baby enough so you need to supplement. If you really want to do this, don't even keep formula available.

We had latching issues in the hospital. My daughter went 9 hours without latching and nursing. It was very hard, I was crying. But she was fine. With lots of help, we got the issue sorted out. I did NOT give her a bottle or formula. We were giving her finger drops to give her something.

It's always ok to ask

Her situation doesn't mean you can't try your best. Just stick with it. Don't supplement formula, feed on demand, and make sure you stay well hydrated and your eating enough. If you need any help, don't be shy to ask a nurse to help you or a LC.

This is a great link with lots of info. Click on BF in the upper left, it will take you to a page that has info on getting started and all sorts of other stuff. It's a good site to bookmark. You can look up if meds are safe to take while BF as well.

supplementing is good though if the baby isn't eating

I'd rather my baby be fed than malnourished

Yes, but so many women give in THINKING they are not giving their baby enough milk, and screw themselves by supplementing when they didn't need to.

If you go in for a checkup and the doc says your baby is loosing weight, and says you need to supplement, that is one thing. But that is not what we are referring to.
