Life Insurance denied because of Autism?!?

posted 20th Jan '12
Is it not discrimination to deny a child completely medically healthy, on no meds, but diagnosed with a developemental delay, life insurance? I am beyond pissed right now, but I don't know if I am wasting my energy. We had insurance on my oldest but my DH finally got life insurance for the other two but my 3 year son with Autism just got denied. I have looked up Canadian insurance policies but there is nothing ?Any help advice-has your kid been denied?

I really don't know, hun.

All I know is that I don't agree with them denying your son because he has autism. That is not right!

Would you say that it sounds like discrimination, or am I overreacting?

It sounds like discrimination to me. I don't think you're overreacting at all. I would be furious too if I were you.

Thanks.I tried to call today but it is probably best that they were out-because I had a few choice words for them.I could see if they were worried about his diapraghmatic hernia he had when he was small but it was repaired with surgery. They didn't even ask us any questions, just damn well denied usm.Smurf I am still irate, lol I better go grab a glass of wine, lol How many more months before your next bundle of love?

Drink some wine for me, please! Lol

I'd let them have it too! To deny him without even asking any questions is ridiculous. Autism isn't life threatening, so I don't understand why they'd deny him. It just doesn't make any sense to me. I am so angry for you, hun.

I have 5 months left.   I am waiting patiently to have my ultrasound done so I can find out what the gender of the baby is. We're hoping for a girl, but we'll be happy either way.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a girl! Going to have some wine now and drown my sorrows *sigh*. Have a good night, and thanks.

I do believe they are within legal rights. It sucks, but unfortunately, it's all in thier policies. Like, you can get denied for having being diagnosed with depression. They fear you are a risk for suicide or injury, even if you are being treated (which you most likely are if you bothered to get the diagnosis). They most likely fear that kids with autism are more likely to get hurt or put themselves in harms way.

We haven't tried to get my son a policy yet. Guess we'll see what happens.

I can understand depression being cause for denial but not Autism. An Autistic person isn't any more likely to drop dead than someone without it but eaqually as healthy physically.

I'm aware - my son HAS autism.

A person with depression (which my husband has) is not going to just drop dead either. My son on the other hand, is a flight risk. He has no idea about danger and is prone to attempting to flee. He isn't afraid of heights and once scaled over the side of our fenced/gated in deck (a 16 foot drop down, and yes, he was fine). My son is at WAY more of a risk of getting hurt (without even meaning) than my husband is.

So does mine, I was just making an observation. And "drop dead" was obviously not a serious statement. I have Bipolar Disorder and I don't walk around in fear I'll just fall to the floor dead while I'm grocery shopping.

I hadn't considered the complete lack of danger knowledge many Autistic children have when I was thinking about life insurance denials.
