Feeding Question..Help!

posted 9th Apr
I was planning on feeding the baby with formula.. but serveral people have told me since I didnt wanna breast feed, I just atleast try to the first few weeks,..maybe during my maternity leave.. They say its so healthy for the baby..How easy do you think it would be to breasfeed the first few weeks then switch to formula... is that a good idea? What do you think?

They usually dont have a problem going from breast to bottle its going from bottle to breast you would usually have trouble with. Even only breastfeeding one time does SOME good so its really up to you. I only did it a few days with my older two and for 2 weeks with the youngest. They never had trouble taking a bottle with formula.

Well, it's really up to you. They say that breastfeeding gives more nutrients, but I, for one, cannot breast feed on account of my medication, thus, I've used formula on my son this entire time - not only is he VERY healthy, but he doesn't ever get sick, is growing to be so big and he's actually bigger than most babies - which isn't a bad thing - his Pediatrician said it's just because he's SOOOO healthy.

I'm NOT implying that women who breastfeed don't have healthy babies, rather, that you can still have just as healthy as a baby if you feed them formula. I've heard of those who do both, so it's up to you.

I hope this helps.

I don't think you'll have a problem switching - I didn't. But according to the doctors and such the more breastmilk you can give the better. So, a week would be better than none at all.

Any amount of time spent breastfeeding is beneficial for your little one. I encourage you to try and then if you have to switch it isn't that difficult. Who knows- you may like breastfeeding and be able to pump at work. Just give it a whirl and see if breastfeeding works for you. It can't hurt to try! Best of luck to you however you decide.

I did both with my daughter after going back to work. I'd just use formula durring the day and when I was home I'd breastfeed. But the first few weeks I strictly breastfed just because I was home with her already and it was cheaper/easier. Easier because when she woke up in the middle of the night I didn't have to make her a bottle. I could just put her up to my breast and feed her...
If you going back to work is the only thing keeping you from breastfeeding, then I would consider doing both.. But whether or not to breastfeed is every mom's personal decision. Don't let anyone else make it for you....

you should be fine, just give an adequate amount of time to introduce the formula to the baby cause some babys take a while to adjust to the formula, or prefer one brand over another. my son was a miserable gassy beast when i tried enfamil i switched to similac and he was a new baby. slowly introduce it. like giving the baby one bottle of formula a day and gradually eliminate the breast milk.

They usually don't have a problem with it. If the baby does, just do half BM and formula until adjusting. Like in the same bottle put 2 ounces BM, 2 ounces formula. Just so the baby can get the taste for formula. If you even have that problem.

I pump and give my baby both breatmilk and formula, and it helps to avoid confusion later if/when I go strictly to formula.

Not only is it good for baby it is good for you to. Nusring helps your uterus contract back to its prepregnancy size faster. I have a 4 month old and have exclusively breastfeed up until a week ago when we added baby rice cereal. Not only is nursing good for you and baby, it gives you some time to relax with you baby. Make sure that you have a good spot to sit and just relax. If you want to continue nursing even after you go back to work, buy a Medella breast pump and just inform your employer that you are nursing and need time to pump. They will understand. I stay at home with my baby right now but am in the Natl Guard in Fl and I just take my pump to drill with me and about every three hours or so go in the bathroom and pump. Good luck and remember do what is best and most comfortable for you and your baby.
