re: Addiction.

I don't think they could. Unless they have been in that position before. You may "think" you know what their going through, but truth is, you don't. I have a friend that's a recovering addict.I can sit all day and believe it's not going to be as hard for him as it really is, but truth of the matter is, it's the hardest thing he's ever had to do.

It's so many things. From waking up every day knowing what you're doing is wrong.. that you're letting down your friends, family, coworkers, more important... yourself. Knowing youre better than that but still succumbing to it every single day, and thinking about nothing except where you're going to score next.

*sigh*

Sounds like you know the feeling. Hugs.

I do... thank you. I've been an addict since I was 18. (Haven't used in 14 years though, woo hoo!)

At the time though, I had my family and friends upset with me, wondering why I didn't just "knock that smurf off" and "go back to normal". ha ha

Quoting Man Bear Pig [WAL]:" I feel you can read tons and tons about it... but you still won't "get it" until you're there. It's ... [snip!] ... until you're there. It's easy for people who have studied it even, to sit there and say "it's not that difficult... just stop""

Exactly, but that goes for any situation another hasn't gone through...People sit there and tell you all of the time what they would do in your situation but have never been there personally so of course it is easy for them to say what they would do when they haven't actually been in your shoes.

Personally I think it depends on how co-dependant a non addict is/was on the addict, in how much they do understand it. I agree that learning about it can make you understand quite a bit. But not 100% to get the feelings behind it.

BUT... if it was someone you were in a relationship with, or a parent and you were very co-dependant on them, I think that gives you another level of understanding. Because that can be an addiction of sorts in it self.

That's very true. It's hard to wrap our heads around things we're unfamiliar with, yet we all sit here and judge, whether it's drug abuse, abortion, money issues, or relationship issues.

Depends really. Personally if I were going to someone for addiction treatment I'd prefer they knew more than just the textbook. It's hard to be understanding and empathetic if you have no idea what it's like to be in that position. IMO

Its a lot easier to think that way when you're outside the situation. I softness wondered that about my dad. But as I got older, I saw just how hard everything was for him. Easier said than done.
