Giving birth with HPV

posted 7th Apr
I am wondering what some of you women that have HPV have done when it comes to giving birth. HPV is a VERY common thing, as for almost 90% of women have some form of it.
I know it can be passed from the mother to the child if given "natural"birth, but is that always the case?
I really would like to stay away from a C-section if at all possible but if that is not possible than I am willing to do whatever it takes.

Well I actually don't have HPV (miscommunication with your doctor is always awesome when it comes to someones health  ) but at the time of my son's birth i believed i did and i still had a vaginal birth.
i believe the only time they say a vaginal birth is dangerous is if you have warts at the time. i'd say just discuss it with your Doc - I'm sure it'll be fine though =]

As far as I know, it's not really a big deal unless the warts are really big. I dealt with that a couple of years ago, even had to have a LEEP because of severe dyplasia...Def ask your doctor and get the best possible information.

I'm glad you asked this. I have one small wart close to where my leg meets. I know it's a form of HPV (haven't been diagnosed, but it's obvious). Should that be a problem for me?

I know I do not have any warts. I had a coloscopy last April, and they removed everything and such. My doctor knows I have been told I have HPV, and I have had the coloscopy, but I have not been able to discuss this with her yet. I plan on doing so when I go to the dr this Thursday..

As long as you're not having an active breakout of HPV, you're good to go. I have HPV (and will always have it - just not always have the outbreaks), and had a normal, vaginal delivery. Bring it up with your DR, and he/she should let you know what needs to be done. You should be good to go though - as long as you're not having an outbreak.

Just because your DR removed anything during a colposcopy, doesn't mean you can't still have outbreaks. HPV is Human Papiloma VIRUS. A virus is not cureable, and you will have it for life. You won't always have outbreaks though. I got it when I was 18, and had my last outbreak when I was 19. I haven't had one since, but still test positive for the virus.

I have HPV, but haven't had any problems since 1995. I was told that during an outbreak a woman CANNOT give birth and it must be a C-Section due to chance of transmission to the baby. If you've had three paps in a row without incident then it's okay to give birth naturally as LONG as there isn't an outbreak. Some women have the virus, but will NEVER have an outbreak. Just an FYI. Go to www.webmd.com for more info.

Yes I understand that, but as well it is something that can become unactive. My regular gyn has had that discussion with me and in most cases they do become unactive so its nothing to worry about. I never knew I had it until one of my paps became abnormal.
Either way, as long as I do not pass it on to my child, thats all I am concerned about!   Thank you though

Sorry - I wasn't trying to be rude (if it sounded rude). I just didn't want you to think it was end all/be all. I understand some women know quite a bit about their beodies, but some women are fairly naieve to situations, and I just wanted to clarify if you happened to be the latter of the two...

there are 2 strains of hpv... one is genital warts and the other is a virus which may or may not lead to cervical cancer someday... I'm not certain, but I think if you have the latter you can deliver naturally... also if you had a coloscopy that probably means you had the cervical cancer kind (which DOESN'T mean you will get cancer)... a coloscopy allows them to biopsy cells on your cervix... I could be wrong about whether or not you can deliver naturally with the 2nd strain of the virus, but there ARE 2 strains... not all hpv is genital warts...

If you've had a pap smear then youve most likely been tested... if you have an abnormal pap then they test the abnormal cells for the 2 different strains of hpv (and other diseases I believe)... If you notice little bumps though you should probably have your doctor check it out-- could be genital warts or herpes.
