Red wine in pregnancy?

posted 7th Jan '12
I got a new job and for a Christmas gift I was given a bottle of really nice red wine.
I have been told my many people, and my doctor, that one glass of red wine is perfectly fine... but I am still skeptical....

I just wanted to hear what other mamas were told.

Thank you.

A glass on occasion has never been proven to be harmful, and there are even recent studies that indicate that light drinking could have benefits that total abstaining from alcohol in pregnancy does not.

It is not proven how much alcohol can effect a baby. So, the safest thing to do is not have it...but some doctors say it is good for a mother's blood pressure..or something? i'm not against it by any means...but there just isn't enough knowledge for me to risk it!

It's fine. You're not going to hurt your baby with one glass of wine.

However, I tried on a few occassions to drink a glass of wine and as soon as I took a drink got immediate burning extremely painful heartburn. So for me... not worth it!

In nursing school we were told 1 drink a day is fine but never tell anyone that because some people are told 1 and hear 10. The serving size of a glass of wine is only half a cup, so keep that in mind. Most people I know think it's when the glass is full. So that's why they say none at all. American's don't know portion control.

That is what I was told as well. That it increases the blood flow and yadda yadda yadda.

I am not a drinker at all, in fact this is my first real bottle of wine in my fridge... so I was excited to crack it open but I'm a worry wart.

"This is such a good study that it should shut down this line of research," said Boostein, who plans to refer people to the paper when they ask him about drinking during pregnancy, and hopes that research dollars can now go towards finding the effects of other, more troublesome chemicals.

"It is no longer valid to argue that we don't know enough about low-dose drinking during pregnancy or that the known effects of binge drinking may penetrate to low-dose drinkers somehow," he added. "There is no detectable risk associated with light or moderate drinking during pregnancy."

A five ounce glass is fine. I wouldn't do more than that.

Red wine doesn't go in the fridge.... especially a really nice bottle of it.
White wine- served chilled
Red wine- room temp

Forget that, drink it how you like it.

I was told that it is uncertain what amount of alcohol can affect the baby, so its best to stay away. I have had tons of friends say its fine...but I would rather avoid it for 10 months of my life, rather than live with the guilt forever, should something happen.

There are newer studies that prove occasional light drinking has no effect. Red wine is good for you. Everything during pregnancy (life in general for that matter) is about moderation.

I like to have my red wine cold...sometimes. it would depend on the maker and type of wine. but usually warm temp is best...it's just sometimes gotta be cold. lol
