Yes, at least, some of the masses. These days, they usually have some in vernacular, some in Latin, or so I understand.

The one funeral mass I went to had a mix of latin and vernacular (English in this case).

Trust me, a guy going to seminary to become a priest WILL learn latin!

oh boy. how about a book on how to remember peoples names. he's gonna have to get good at that.
just b/c he is going to seminary doesnt mean he loses his identity. he will still have interests. is there a topic he loves enough to want a book on it? Like a biography of someone great?? Maybe he likes famous religious figures - Gandhi, Billy Graham, Dalai Lama. Obviously, if its the type of seminary that doesnt allow books, my suggetsions wont work.

Don't get him a rosary, chances are he's already got one.
Do you know if there is a certain saint that he's identifies with? You could get him a statue of that saint.

The first thing I thought of was a bible case or cover. They have really lovely ones, but really I don't know him so I don't know what kind to get him. I like the journal idea too.
