Breastfeeding

posted 15th Dec '11
First off I just want to say; I know all the positives for mama and baby; so that is not what I need to hear...

Here is my question, for people who are becoming moms... (I am due in April) or mom's to new borns, if you were nervous about breastfeeding, how did you get over that? I want to do it for the benefits, but I just can't wrap my head around how Nervous I am about it... I don't even know where the nerves are coming from... its really not something to be nervous about, people say it just comes naturally but I just don't see that happening for me... whats your thoughts/experinces... positive & negative?

TIA

totally tried to bf...was completely confident it was going to go smoothly (hell i didnt even own one bottle) he came out, put him on my nipple, he couldnt latch....smurfing sucked! Then i felt worthless and like i was deformed....why couldnt i breastfeed....woke up one morning had no more milk in my breast! IT WAS HORRIBLE! so, its okay to be nervous....and it only comes naturally to some! definitely not me

Thank you for sharing... something that is really scaring me is that I haven't started leaking yet... and (TMI) one of my nipples have a white bump on it, and its gotten bigger since becoming pregnant... although my doctor tells me its probably just a change in hormones and wont have any effect.. I am still nervous...

I wasn't really nervous but I was worried that it would be too difficult. We had a rough go at first getting the latch worked out but after about 3 weeks of frustration and super sore nipples we finally figured it out. I would literally cry when I had to feed him. I just hung in there and watched a ton of youtube videos and had SO help me figure it out and eventually we did. You'll honestly just have to hang in there but you could have an easier go at it then me. Just get as much help as possible if you need it.

It's probably a milk blister. You should google it. I had those a bunch of times from improper latching. Eventually it will go away but you'll have to figure out if baby is latching poorly and/or not draining your boob.

didnt come natural to me at all. i was a littler nervous, & i didnt even really want to breastfeed, i felt pressured my nurses, doctors, family, WIC, pretty much everyone.
we had a really rough time. i had flat nipples, baby couldnt latch, baby was tongue tied, low milk supply, baby lost weight, i was actually allergic to breastfeeding... but we got through it & now she is 18 months old & still nursing!
i guess the only thing that helped me get through it all was the intense bonding & love i felt when i breastfed her.

When you start to breastfeed it's not easy you both are learning but after the first few weeks it gets better. It didn't just come to me I had to learn it was hard but rewarding my daughter is 3 months and she's been breastfed the whole time I love breastfeeding her. Just don't give up I almost did the nurses were driving me crazy and wouldn't leave me alone so get a lactation consultant to help you out right away. Good luck!!

Thats another thing, here they pressure you a lot and I don't want to feel pressure... maybe thats what some of the nerves are about. I want to be the one making the decision not people trying to sway my mind, but I am glad that you stuck with it and it worked out for you!

I completely understand being nervous. It was NOT easy for me at all. I promise that hanging in there can help. And asking for help, I only asked once because I thought I had it figured out. Boy oh boy was I wrong but after a few weeks we did get it worked out and now I love breastfeeding!

Oh mama; I am so sorry for your loss! And I actually cringed when I thought of a nipple ring being pulled out!!

No I've never pumped. If you do pump you should wait something like six weeks or so. But I don't plan to ever pump.
