switching from breastfeeding to formula

Jocelyn was nursiing for 2 weeks, and right before she went home from NICU they switch her to simulac neosure. She had trouble having bowl movements for the first week, so they helped her poop. She came home saturday and was doing really good. I noticed she still wasnt having normal bowl movements like she use to and her abodomen size was up. I called the doctor to ask him, and he told me to rush her back down to childrens. i did and everything is alright.. but she is still having trouble pooping. she grunts all the time and brings her legs up to her stomach when shetries. She is still eating really good. eating more and more actually. i just dont know what to do about the whole pooping. i hate seeing her in pain. she goes for her check up on thursday, and a nurse told me to use rectal stimulation with a thermometer. is there anything else i can do? she is 3 weeks wednesday.

I'm not sure because she is a preemi but 1 tsp of karo syurp in 4 oz of formula will make them poop better. I would def ask your doctor if this is a good option though.

There's actually another post in here some where with lots of great ideas, if you have time you should check for it. What I did with my son is I gave him a half a suppository every 7th day if he hadn't had a bowel movement on his own. When she goes, is the stool hard or soft? It's work for these little guys to get the feces out, so just because she grunts doesn't mean she's constipated. If she goes and its soft, then I wouldn't worry about it. When my son went to mostly formula he was only having a BM about every 5-7 days and my pedi said that was fine. Good luck!

I would only use rectal stimulation because that's what the nurse suggested and she was premature. Just stick the rectal therm with some petroleum up there and wait until it beeps, she will have likely pooped by the time it beeps...

Call the doc again though to see if there are other options. She may need a different formula.

yeah my one week old has to have formula more then my pumped breast milk and he pushes all day to get one BM out i feel so bad but once it is going all i have to do is tikle his butt with the wipes and out comes more like a volcano

what ever u do, do not tellthe doctor if u plan on using karo. they say a baby cant digest it but it does do the trick for most babies. My baby on the other hand it dont work and she wont drink sugar water nor apple juice dialuted. My doctor told me to use the suppository (hlaf of one) every couple of days plus he switched her formula. But of course right now my baby hates the formula so it back to the drawing board again for mine. Good luck!

I;ll never understand why people think its ok to give a newborn juice. You wanna talk about not being able to digest. Plus this is a preemie. Please don't give your newborns juice you could really do more damage then good.

my doctor told me to give my kids a little juice for constipation. i dont give her a full bottle, i gave her like 1tsp. my doctor would never promote giving kayro syrup.
