This is just f***ed up!!

posted 4th Dec '11
So since this little one is a surprise and my husband and I just got married, we were still in the process of finding insurance when we got pregnant. After making calls to find out about getting insurance we discovered that most places are saying that they will not give me OR my husband ANY insurance coverage because I am pregnant. I knew that pregnancy was considered a "pre-existing condition" but I did not know that meant they would not cover anything for either of us. So, we are stuck with medicaid coverage until the baby gets here. I am willing to accept that I can not get insurance right now, but my husband? WTF?! We live in Idaho, a conservative state that doesn't give two smurfs about human life, so I'm not surprised.  Did anyone else experience this, or is there a non-profit anyone knows of that I can call?

I thought Idaho was one of the biggest anti-abortion states out there?

I'm in the same situation....we can't get any coverage besides medicaid till our LO is born.. and my medicaid only covers pregnancy related stuff so if I get sick or anything happens that has nothing to do with the baby I have to pay outta pocket.

I dont think she was talking about abortion, I think she meant Idaho doesnt care two smurfs about the people living in it! Which, from personal experience, is true for the most part.

OP, I had to get medicade when I was pregnant cause my insurance didnt cover it but my husband was able to keep his. May I ask who you were shopping through?

Idaho is one of the biggest anti-abortion states. That's not what I'm talking about though. If this is in regard to my statement about Idaho not caring for human life, I'm speaking about the fact that there are little to no insurance programs, or social welfare programs in place for expectant mothers. My husband and I both work in social welfare and the programs here are very faulty and prejudice. The one's that are in place are extremely difficult to qualify for. That doesn't mean they care about human life, only that they feel it is ok to infringe on other people's human rights because of their own moral beliefs. They basically send the message that one should stay pregnant no matter what the situation, but that they don't care what-so-ever what happens to that life after baby is born. Is that moral? There are good people here, just crappy policies. I stand by my statements and feel very strongly about this issue. I have never and will never get an abortion, because it is not right for me, but I am very much pro-choice. So, if you do not have comments regarding the issue I made a post about (insurance) please do not comment because you disagree with me politically. Terry Reilly is the only place we have found that offers affordable services, and most people we have spoken to there are indeed pro-choice because they see the consequence of these politics every day. I'm not sure what your stance is on any of this so I am not speaking to you directly, I just feel the need to address that statement if anyone feels it is about abortion.

We were shopping through Health Insurance Sort. We also called insurance companies individually. I am just having a hard time grasping why my husband can't even get coverage. We are totally fine with settling with medicaid, but it just seems wrong! Since we just got married and graduated from college, we were in a limbo period of insurance, we got pregnant right when we both didn't have any coverage. I think if he had some coverage already he might be able to keep it, but I feel bad for him cause I know he wants the insurance. Just for peace of mind. Your daughter is adorable by the way!!

That's a bummer! It just feels unsettling doesn't it? We want to do everything we can to prepare for baby, so we are just sad we can't find anyone to cover us in case of a serious incident.

Thank you very much! Ahhh that is probably what it was. My husband had his before we were together and then I was added. It just totally didnt cover pregnancy so I had to get something. I totally understand wanting it for peace of mind, I work an insurance company and see so many situations every single day where people didnt think they'd need it.

I hope you get everything sorted out! I really do agree with the post you made about how Idaho is soooo anti abortion but will not help those once the kids are here.. unless you are totally not even trying to help yourself and arent white tbh. We've run into similar situations so I can relate. Hang in there!

Yea, I hate it....and DH really needs to go to the eye doctor because he needs new contacts and his glasses aren't the right prescription so he gets really bad headaches all the time and we can't do anything about it   ...but the upside is we only have 4 weeks left before our LO gets here and we can get insurance. It just seems like it can't come soon enough.
