spit up and chokeing.....

posted 29th Mar
you know i know that alll babies spit up, and that's no big deal, but i think i'm going to lose my mind really. Illiana has a few times thrown up to the piont of being on able to breathe. and a few times in her bed. after we go thro such pains to make sure she doesn't. we feed her burb her forever and a day and sit her up right for a few , maybe about 15 20 minutes, before we try and lay her down. but she still will throw up, and we have to suction her nose and mouth because she starts to choke.
we lost our god daughter a bout a year ago, and she died after she threw up and had inhaled. we didn't realize it till it was too late. we're terrified that this will happen to our girls and of course this spiting up is surely not helping our state of mind.
what can we do that we are not already doing? and i swear to god if anyone says "burb her more" i'm going to scream. how freaking long do you want us to try and burb her for??? an hour?? we're getting damn close!!! help please.... i don't want to lose a baby.....

With babies with reflux, or who spit up alot, it's recommended that you not lay them down for a good 1/2 hour after they've taken a bottle.. You might start to try that.. and maybe see if you can get a sleep positioner and place her on her side?

how old is she??
Nate had severe reflux when he was a baby....and when I sat severe I man it was so bad the doc suggested he have surgery (we chose not to)
we also had a night when he was about 4 months old where we noticed he would fall asleep and wake up gasping for air (which was obviously the spit up coming up his throat) thats ho we found out he had it cause we rushed him to the hospital. he is now nearly 15 months and still on lanzor-which is like a anti-acid so it helps not to burn his eosophagus (sp?)
does her bring up smell like vomit???

Use receiving blankets to stabalize her and lay her on her side (like they do in the NICU) For now that will keep her from choking. Then I would make a pronto appointment with her doc. They may recommend adding rice cereal or medication. Some babies (especially preemies) have to sleep on an incline because their reflux is so bad. Your doc is really the only one that can tell you what is best for YOUR baby though. I'd just recommend getting off her back while she's sleeping for the immediate future.

This might be out there but if its actual vomit and not just a mild spit up, then ask for her to have an ultrasound to be checked for pyloricstenosis at least google it so you can see if she possibly fits that catagory. My son had this severely and had to have a mild surgery @ a few weeks old, it was HELL before the surgery, since his was to bad, he vomited almost everything up and I was breastfeeding. But one of the reason's why the first Dr. didn't catch it was because he was still gaining weight.
Anyway, just a thought when I read your post to please ask to be checked for it

Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding?

My lil bro had oober bad spit-up/vomit on formula so we had to play around with diff types of formulas to find one his digestive system could handle. And boy oh boy is soy formula spat up disgusting!!!!

As for acid reflux, my neice had that. She had to be put on meds for it. Oh, and she was a breastfed baby.

I can understand how frustrated and worried you feel. Have you tried putting her on an incline, you can buy wedges to place under the sheets or there are these awesome bed blocks which raise the cot up to an angel so that it drains away and makes breathing easier.

A couple of months...I'm not sure about specifics. But her reflux was so bad that her spit-up was projectile, not the typical spill down your chin spit-up.

She didn't need to go back on/stay on meds. She outgrew her acid reflux...and SIL stopped the breastfeeding around 7 or 8 months. Now that my niece is over a year old she doesn't get formula either.

This happens to my son as well, but I usually know when it's coming because first he screams bloody murder then he throws his head back trying to breath. I pick him up right away and always have a bulb syringe right next to him so that I can help get it out of his nose. Another thing I do so that I won't worry so much is put him on his side. And I know your not supposed to, but I put him to sleep on his stomach only during the day and under my constant supervision. I myself am going to ask his pediatrician what else can be done, he has an appt tomorrow.

Ask about acid reflux meds!

And the "best" position to put a sleeping baby in varies from decade to decade. I wouldn't worry about belly sleeping. In the mid nineties it was "best" to side sleep. In earlier years it was belly sleeping that was best. Now it's back sleeping. And the reasoning each time is to reduce SIDS...

the fact about sids is sids has become an all incompassing term for any kind of crib death. wether it's apnea, or spit up. the fact is sids is really rare. sids is a slight deformity that can not be found before hand, that is going to to happen, and you can't stop it. period. i wish doctors and health perfessionals would stop using it in that way. sids can't be reduced. they need to start telling people that they can. it just makes them feel like crap when it does happen, as if they can actually stop it. did you ever wonder why alot of supposed sids caes are autopstyed? for two reasons. 1. to see if it was actually a homicde and 2. to see if the deformity is there. then if the deformity is present THEN it's sids.

I know that this is true, but I think that doctors and other professionals tell parents this because of suffocation risks. I have no idea why they don't just tell parents that instead of calling everything SIDS. I also think it would completely freak parents out if doctors went around saying 'your baby could die of SIDS, there's no way for us to know if he will, and there's nothing you can do to prevent it, but it might happen'. Ya know? And I really don't think it's that bad. It at least makes parents diligent about safety, which cuts down on the number of other accidents babies can have.
