I haven't been on methadone personally. But its my understanding that you need to ween yourself off of it ASAP. Otherwise after you give birth to your baby he or she may have withdrawls.

Can you talk to the advisors at your clinic?

its not asap it has to be done slowly so the baby doesnt go into distress inutero.

Right now the methadone is helping you, risk vs benefit.
The doctor needs to watch you carefully and start to wean you off when it's appropriate. Many many people get addicted to methadone because they miss use it.
I've never done it personally, i've never had an addiction. But in my office we see tons of addicts currently trying to take it to break the habit. The doctors follow very closely.
Good luck

ETA: it's a class C drug, which isn't 100% studied in human fetus' but once again comes in the risk vs benefit.

"ween yourself off of it ASAP"
lol not "quit cold turkey," but take less and less until you aren't taking any at all.

Methadone can even be safely used in breastfeeding under 20mg daily.
It's better for mom to be on it than not on it, especially if she couldn't "wean" before the pregnancy
There are more risks to mom with tapering than there are to baby. If baby comes out with withdrawals there is medication to correct it and make baby okay.

From what I've been reading, it's not recommend to wean at all. It's recommended to stay on the dosage despite the miligrams that work for the mother. Getting off of it can cause more harm than good. Though it says there have been women to taper off successfully, and some required inpatient stays.

Regardless I think OP should talk to her OBGYN. I'm sure they can recommend the best method for her dosage.

And more than likely she is, considering a doctor has to prescribe methadone and follow it closely.

She's probably already seeing a doctor (or just going to the methadone clinic? IDK the details) in order to get the methadone currently.
But an OBGYN will know exactly what to do for methadone use during pregnancy.

My brothers ex gf was on it while she was pregnant. They had her stay on it the whole pregnancy. When the baby was born he had to be weened off of it.

Do you still need any info? I can help/direct you if you still need it. I have experience in this. If you have been on it or are detoxing from another opiate, then methadone is a better option and should be monitored throughout pregnancy. I really hate when people that have no real clue about this stuff judge. Some babies don't even withdraw. And when they do it is very minimal. The only things that havebeen attributed to methadone use during pregnancy is withdrawal for the baby--they do not scientifically HOW MUCH the fetus recieves in utero. The methadone goes to 3 places:the Mother, The Placenta, and Then to the fetus. Some fetuses recieve more than others, and a very minimal amount. I am going to be a certified methadone advocate and have had to study this stuff and have also had a baby born on methadone (wasnt by my choice but it ended up being the best decision for me )
I will PM you. Sorry for the rant lol
