32 weeker/4 months old.. progress?!?

posted 28th Mar
i had my son at 32 weeks and hes now 4 months old, i was just wondering how other peoples babies are that are in teh same age and what not, they want to send him to a developmental specialist, he still doesn't follow things with his eyes, he doesn't roll over and hedoesn't have very good head control. i was kinda wondering, is this about normal for a baby who is 8 weeks behind or is he really that behind?.. he has a heart problem adn i really don't want him to see more doctors and be around more people than really needed. thanks ladies!

My son was 31 weeks 5 days, and he didn't roll over until he was 6 or 7 months... Not many (all though some do) 2 months old roll over either, so i don't know why they are stressing about the rolling over part.   But Dylan did have decent head control (about that of a 2 month old) when he was 4 months. If they are suggesting him see a developmental specialist, I say go for it. They normally have to have a 20% delay from their adjusted age for it to be a concern, and they will do all sorts of things to score him to see how delayed he is. We had Dylan evaluated a couple of times, once for walking and once for talking. I am glad we did, bc he was fine! But hearing it from them made us feel a lot better. Good Luck!

thank you! i just feel so bad for them judging him, i mean he has good enough head control when i hold him and sit him up in my arms, he can stand when i hold him up but they are worried coz he doesn't follow things with his eyes and he doesn'treally follow noise. thank you for the info! i feel alot better about my little man now. and i hope yours is doing good too. i just feel so left out because my sister has a 5 month old who is term and he is in a walker.. and mine isn't even interested in tummy time, i just feel so bad.

Babies develop differently My son is a preemie and is now almost 2 months old he's rolled over and he grabs at peoples hair and likes to pull his blanket over his head.He likes to follow things with his eyes he smiles alot and he also laughs.sometimes

HOWEVER my neice was a fullterm baby and didn`t do most of them things untill she was at least 7 months old so don`t listen to what they say he's going to develop when he wants to

Both of my preemies have seen specialists. I know it kinda makes you worry, but there is no better piece of mind! Another thing to think about is that besides being premature, boys are usually a little slower to catch on to the social mile stones. My son makes very limited eye contact and couldn't care less about things I put up to his face. He did roll over for the first time on the 12th though (from front to back) His head control is pretty good, I think, but he gets tired easily and will kind of slump over after a while. All normal, in my opinion! My daughter did these things also and she is now ahead of her peers in most categories!

Who suggested you to have him seen? My son was a 32 week preemie and never had any problems developmentally but I still had him checked my specialist because the NICU and Doctors told me that 32 weekers always have some type of develpomental problem. Well my son showed them. Hes 18 months old and has been tested at a 24 month + level and is doing things my 3 year old nephew don't do. So I personally am in favor for getting him seen. If there is nothing wrong they will put your mind to rest if there is its way better to find it sooner then later. They can help so much. I have a friend who has a 32 weeker herself and her son is the same age as my son and he don't crawl or say any words. She refuses to get him help. If your worried about people being around him (I know the feeling my son didnt leave my house for months except for appointments) Ask them when there the least busy. Most doctors offices are VERY good about getting a child in first thing in the morning or last appointment of the day if they are a preemie. Also call the day of the doctors appointment and ask if anyone thats going to be working with your son is sick and ask that the least amount of people handle him. Also make sure you see the people wash there hands. Nothing worst then having someone walk into the room and touch your preemie. Ha I know I must sound like a WAY over protective parent. My son managed to get through RSV season with not even a sniffle two years in a row now! So it shows how picky I am but its a good way to keep your little one healthy! Anyways I hope this kind of helps and don't worry so much doctors seem to blow things out of hand just to save there own butt. Think of it this way if they didnt say something was wrong with your son and 6 months down the road he had something wrong they would be the ones at fault so they are probably just saving there own butts like my sons doctors do! So good luck and see what they can do for you in terms of seeing him and keeping things clean for him! Oh and hint with my son when we took him they had a bunch of toys there for him to follow and grab on to. Ofcourse me being the picky mom I am I made sure to bring small rattles of my own so he didnt have to touch any of theres you never know where them toys have been or how often they are cleaned. Take care and good luck!

i found out part of the reason he isn't doing much stuff is because part of his brain never developed, he has seizures we just got out of the hospital this weekend. hes on Phenobarbital and he has calcifications on his brain

Early intervention if he is behind will help a lot. They aren't judging him per se. Just giving him the help he needs. My 4 month old twins don't roll over either. My full term 42 weeker didn't do much at 4 months either as far as rolling over.

Never as in it'll catch up one day or never as in he'll need phenobarbital permanently?
