No MOre disney!!! *vent*

At college a discussion came up in a race, gender, and sexuality class and someone told us about an experiment that was done on children (a simiular experiment was done on tyra) here is the link...video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1091431409617440489
anyways the video shows how children, black, white and other...can be brainwashed into thinkn a certain way about themselves through the media.
Its kinda long ,but they gave children two dolls. one was black one was white. they asked the children questions like..."who's the good baby" and most of the children would point to the white one..."whos the bad baby" and they would point to the black one....

I recently decided to do the same experiment with my niece. we went to the store. i grabbed 2 of the same types of dolls (same style, same clothes, same hair) only difference was one was black the other was white. I begin to ask her simular questions like who is the prettiest...She pointed to the white doll. "who is a princess....pointed to white doll..."who is evil" she points to black doll. Ect.This caused alot of attention in the store. random people stopped by just to watch. Just thought i share... and if u ever have time u should try the experiment w/ ur own kids....its a good way to talk about all people being equal.
What r ur thoughts on this??? anyone familiar w/ the video?

Thats odd huh? I do agree, Disney needs a true African Princess, Jasmine is Middle Eastern... not African...

I never thought About something like this to be honest.My family is what I like to call the "rainbow coalition" we have so many different races in our family and we are all really close So I guess it never dawned on me that it could be possible that what my children are watching could be affecting their views on different races.Im glad you posted this though.Now Im def gonna have to try this out with my children..I dont want them to think that one race is better than the other or more powerful.

i dont see how disney has anything to do with that. i know when i was little i liked to play with dolls that looked like me

Honestly most of them bring it on themselves. They (most) know the stereotype so they feel like they have to live up to it and be all big and bad and ghetto fabulous. If some of them didnt give others a reason to think like that, they wouldnt.

I could say the same thing about a lack of hispanic women role models for my daughter. But I as a parent make sure the I find ways to provide positive hispanic role models for my children.. thru painters and writers... I dont blame disney... and try to boycott disney... I make my own role models for my children... I dont leave it up to a cartoon...

May I just say that we really don't miss having television. Nothing can convince us we're depriving our children  

ok i dont think it's brainwashing. children tend to find people who look similar to them to be beautiful. so instinct would make a child pick the doll that looks more like them(caucasion skin, brown hair, blue eyes, those things). children in preschool tend to play more with children who have similar physical features as them, so girls will play with girls, kids who have glasses feel more comfortable approachign another kid with glasses. they are not old enough to differenciate social stigmas and stereotypes. i think it's just a coincidence, not brainwashing.

I've seen the video.
I think she is saying that Disney doesn't have any black princesses. All of them except Jasmine are white. But none of the villians are black. They are white, or in some cases like Ursula are purple. I don't know.

No its not frm disney. But it can be related since there is not a black princess. sending the message that only lightskinnd women can be a princess. However i did hear that disney is taking alot of critisim for this and will be comming out with one soon...Thats what i heard atleast!
