Stay in BED!

posted 9th Nov '11
My 4 1/2 year old will not stay in bed at night. She wakes up about an hour after I fall asleep and will stand at the side of my bed and cry. She says it's too scary in her room, but she has a nightlight and the hallway light on. Lately I've just been getting up and going into her room to sleep when she wakes, otherwise she cries until she wakes my 1 year old. I'm tired and cranky.   Anyone have advice???

My son needs his hall light and bedroom light on as well as some kind of background noise in order to sleep in his room all night.

Is she scared of the dark even though there are lights or is she scared of monsters or something along those lines??

I'd just put her in bed with you.

That used to be me. I knew I was NOT allowed to wake up my parents, and I spent almost every night up in bed just going   and terrified. It was awful. I have a lot of empathy for that sort of thing. My daughter gets scared at night so she sleeps with us, and she will until she goes to college if she wants, lol.

My four year old just started the "it's scarey in my room" thing. She has 2 night lights, and a fish tank. It's practically daylight in there. I don't know how to fix it though...but I'm thinking maybe it's just a stage. Are you apposed to her sleeping in your bed? Maybe just for a while?

I thought about putting a fan in there too. Maybe I'll give that a shot tomorrow night. Right now she's on the couch and I'll likely fall asleep on the other couch. Just to get a full nights rest.

She says it's the dark and she has had pretty vivid nightmares before too.

I was the same. Once I was older and my mom wouldn't let my in her bed, I would go to the couch. I STILL don't want to sleep in the dark by myself so I sympathize with Bump. I would never force her to not come to our bed.

Her room is very well lit too! The only problem with her sleeping in our bed is that my husband works very early mornings and she's an eight legged monster at night. Takes up more room than he does! I might have to upgrade to a king sized bed if it comes to that! LOL

My son is scared of monsters in his room, he has also had some bad dreams. So we got some inexpensive body spray(water and a spray bottle would work too) and we spray his room before bed with the "monster spray" He can smell it and it calms him down. We got nightlights to help him with being scared of the dark. We also pick a dream for him to have before bed, not that it will work but I found if he goes to bed thinking of spongebob or something he dreams about it...if he dreams at all that night.

We actually put a tv in my son's room so that we can trick him into letting us turn out the light and then he falls asleep watching half hour dvds.

We upgraded to a king when Jack was born just for that reason lol. Us plus kids in a queen bed was NOT working lol
